I'm a logic user and a coder.. i'm interested in sending note on/off messages from an effect plugin and get them to a instrument plugin.. i know cubase can do this, but is there any way to do it in logic? maybe via the environment there is a way to route midi messages from plugins?

thanks in advance

it's a little differnet if you want to do control an instrument with a midi plug in, but i will explain how..

firstly, you'll have to output the instrument to a bus, any bus is fine.
Secondly, if it is a true midi effect, logic will also see this as an "instrument"..so what you do is go to your INSTRUMENTS drop down menu, and the effect will be there..load it as you would any other instrument...there you will see a little box "sidechain"..click on it, and select the bus that you have the instrument you want to effect routed to..turn the volume of the BUS to zero, and voila, play your heart away!

Thanks much for the reply

I tried a few combinations of that and i was unsuccessful... if you could please tell me what is wrong with this. The MIDIPLUG is the VSTi that is generating midi note on/offs, and the INST is the VSTi that is generating sound (im using FM7 for now.)

AudioInst1 - INST on this, output set to BUS1
AudioInst2 - MIDIPLUG on this, output set to Output 1-2 and sidechain to Bus1

Could you please let me know what's wrong with that? The FM7 doesnt have a sidechain option

thanks

you seem to have it set up correctly...make sure on logic's arrange window, you have the vsti channel of the MIDIPLUG highlighted.
you need to play the MIDIPLUG not the INST....

i do this all the time, so this is weird if its not working..

i presume u r using logic platinum 5.51?

this sidechain feature does not work in logic audio, i am not sure about gold, but definitely works in platinum

I am using LAP 5.5.0 .. i've tried having both tracks highlighted on the arrange, that of the INST and the MIDIPLUG.

Maybe it has something to do for the environment?

It sounds wierd to have the inst outputting to bus 1 and the midiplug sidechained to bus 1... i thought that would just mean the audio from bus 1 would then go to the midiplug... ?

yes that's right..maybe i am misunderstanding what you are trying to do..I use the procedure i have described all the time for vocoding drumloops, or sending on/off messages to midi gates..but that's exactly what is happening, you are feeding the audio of the instrument directly to that midi plugin..is this not what you want to do?

Ah see here's what i want to do... i want a VSTi on say AudioInstrument 1, lets say NI FM7, and i want that to output sound, but instead of getting the notes from a MIDI object on the arrange window, i want the notes to actually come from another plugin.. like that plugin could generate and send MIDI note on and off messages to the FM7. The reason for this is so you could have new methods for sequencing notes other than the piano roll, like a drum machine interface etc

no, sorry, the only way to do this in logic is to record the midi notes in the arrange window..plugins like "stepchild" midi step sequencer, which is an exact example of what you are talking about, do not work in logic afaik..i am pretty sure about this...you might want to try the sonikmatter logic forums at http://community.sonikmatter.com/cgi-bin/emagic/ultimatebb.cgi

if no one knows there, then no one will:) but like i said i doubt its possible Sad

I had thought it was not possible but i've recieved so much interest in a port of a stand alone seq i made to VSTi, I decided to try and research.. thanks so much for your help, its much appreciated!
