Hi,

I was wondering what kind of interfaces you guys like the most?

- Hardware look
- Standard OS look
- Simple and clean
- etc....

Also, knobs or faders?

Ragards,

don't beat me but I like the way SX 2.0 looks..

the best plugins, grafically are:

gotta love the M-Tron
the Waves Mastering Bundle looks pretty neat
I love the backside of the fishfilets
T-RackS
Emagic's internal Instruments look quite nice (EVB3, EVD6, EXS)
I also like the way Groove Agent looks

plugs I don't like because of the interface:

XPhraze
Sampletank
and many many more

perhaps people will find me a bit of a nagger
but i usualy don`t like highly graphicle gui
the best vsti for me look extremely simple
the most relaxing for me would be broken white with marine blue letters
simple faders (i.s.o tweak knobs) and no hidden features or roll downmenus .. just one simple screen that covers all the features
if it would be possible i would want one colour for all my plugs
and one different colour for all my effects ... thats me Smile

What i ment is, what kind of interface do you like working with most.
I can imagine that a great looking interface can work very bad.
i.e. The interface of the Moog Modular VSTi looks nice, but i've heard many people complain about it.

Functionality first, but true designers make functionality look good Wink

The user should be able to see what's going on, without paying too much attention. Squinting to see the settings is quite distracting. GUI should find the balance between screen estate and clarity, nobody wants BIG screenfillers but we all want to see what we need - while playing the keys.

It dont' matter whether knobs or sliders, as long as they are clear. Even H/W style knobs can be made so that they show the setting easily, but generally sliders take less space... I only wish that designers would favor "long-throw" slider for finer adjustments.

Another matter is "psychologic" Smile I mean that the GUI should give a reliable feeling. If it looks like a toy, people might think it sounds like a toy... This might be the clue behind H/W imitation-style. As what comes to inspirational GUIs, I like Bones, Ohmforce and DFP stuff for their rugged, used machine style.

The Tracktion GUI is superior on the host side, it's a perfect combo of functionality and looks. It also looks stable. Crystal is the most usable, but not too beautiful. Anyway, I'd say simple and clean.

The ephonic GUIs are really good so far. Simple and clean,no tiring colours or useless parts. Keep them this way. Knobs or sliders is a detail, really.

Tnx! Very Happy
I'm asking you because i'm currently designing some standard GUI components for new plugins.
I'll try to keep em clear and good looking...

I agree 100%, more pr0n i gui's. Cosmogirl delved briefly into this idea but maybe there are some animated "tweaking" options that can be looked into.

...but seriously. I personally like any gui that is clever, clean and userfriendly and I love a good "midi-learn" function so I don't have screw around in the hardware to get a quick tweak going. I like some of the hardware looks minus the rackears. V-station. B4 etc.

I was just admiring the clean intuitive look of the drumatic plug last night. You should keep doing whatever it is you're doing.

Of course for porn, you can't beat the delay lama.

Thanks... A Drumatic-ish look is what i'm thinking about for the new plugins.

I love things like z3ta+ and PredatOhm. Stuff that looks like it was made by someone who knows what they were doing, regardless of whether it resembles hardware or not.

I like 2d interfaces, Traction/Live &c. Some of the Smartelectronix stuff looks very nice.
Basically, I like an interface that doesn't try to be an imitation of somthing it isn't (and isn't too cluttered).
Sliders are nice. Rotaries, too, the Ableton ones are very cool.

Hi everyone. First posting here.

I agree completely! I usually like Ohmforce knobs the best. Knobs take up less room. The ohm one can be dragged up fast or sideways for micro adj. They can be linked or elastically pulled.
X-Y 's with glide and vertical/horizontal lock are pretty nice too.

But for your case nothing irritates me more than those damn circular dragging knobs in synthedit. Yuck. Too hard to adjust and very unsmooth.

another vote for defiantly 2d and software-esque here

sliders over knobs - if you must have knobs take the ohmforce approach and make them work like sliders [ie - click to lock-on and then vertical motion]

sliders and or knobs are good with a bit of virtual 'resistance' or 'inertia' to them [again like ohmforce]

click-and-type numerical readouts / boxes for parameters that need fine or precise control

examples of what i think is excellent gui design -

tracktion
live
izotope trash
izotope ozone2
z3ta+
rhino
vertigo [cluttered but precise]
concreteFX are getting there

I'd also say keep doing what you are already doing, e-phonic, as I think your interfaces are already V. Classy. I've been very happy to plagiarize all sorts of bits of them.. Very Happy

BTW you might be vaguely interested in the knobs that are on my recently released FL3A. I am experimenting with numeric overlays on the knobs.. It will be interesting to see what the users make of them..!

actually they can be set to respond to vertical rather than rotary.. I agree that they are easier to control by the up and down motion, and will be making all future knobs behave in this way..

i'm surprised that some developers spend months or years coding, just to slap some horrible homegrown mockery on top of it

sorry, just had to get it out of my system

Thanks, they look ok... but i'm thinking of writing a plugin in C++.
I already had some succes while experimentating with the VST SDK.
I wrote a saturator and a pitch-scaler for the SE SDK, and i'm now working on 'porting' it to the VST SDK (slowly Wink.
