Question...Anyone have any advice on getting a good, convincing phonograph sound? I have a project that needs that classic crackle-pop sound, like it's playing right off a record. Right now I'm using Sampletank's dsp phonograph effect, and routing my audio through mda degrade to get a lofi feel. But this is more of a practical solution while I'm working on the song; I would like to find a more 'authentic' emulation for my final mix. Are there any plugs that are good for this purpose? If anyone has any tips they'd like to share, please do.

try izotope's vinyl, it's free and I believe it's also 64 bit signal processing. There are many others that are free, just try looking through the search engines here and also click on the other links buttons, I found some other search engines there too.

I have to concur: as with all of Izotope's stuff, "Vinyl" is top-rate. If it's vinyl you're going for, check it out: it allows you to configure the amount of electric noise, mechanical rumble, warp, scratches, as well as different types of vinyl through the ages.
And it's free! | ||

Has anyone mentioned iZotope Vinyl yet? It's very good. Also, there was a plugin mentioned here a few weeks ago that simulated radio like Vinyl does vinyl. RRadioAM or something...

Remember kids ... anything less than 64 bit and your audio won't sound like dirty vinyl ... the higher the bit precision, the closer it sounds to an old noisey turntable! (stu.macQ)

That's actually probably true. Dirty vinyl and dirty digital don't sound the same. I'm sure it holds true for distortion, as well. All those extra bits help to capture the subtle nuances of dirt.

1] Get a major recording contract
2] Persuade A&R to do an acetate limited edition of the track in question for your coke snorting friends - keep one yourself - this is important 3] Have a terrible argument with your girl friend about her familly 4] She will nail the record to your bathroom door. When cooked, remove and play. Voila!

Also, another really great tool for this is iZotope Vinyl. Definately worth checking out

You know, I'm beginning to re-think my position on iZotope Vinyl. I mean, on paper it does precisely what you're asking for, but since nobody else is mentioning it, maybe it doesn't have much respect. You could always just add a track of you hissing into a microphone...

OT
hehehe.. I have one of these.. well something very similar.. its an edison phonograph.. the discs (diamond discs??) for it are THICK (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch).. and it has one GIANT speaker in the front.. kinda fun to wind it up everynow and then and listen to a random record.. Music really has changed.. i wonder what people will consider of our music today in 100 years.. Someone will be sending a message somehow about this ancient technology called the CD player using huge ~5" diameter discs ![]()

Along similar lines, you could use one of those Vestax vinyl cutters http://www.vestax.com/products/vrx2000.htm if you know a shop or someone who has one, then play it back on VitD's phonograph or similar.

Also, you can just load Izotope Vinyl.
