AuthorTopic: Random Player?

Hello,

I'm not sure this thread belongs to the Effects Forum... Anyway, here is the question.

It is easy to find randomizers (e.g. in the FL Studio Piano roll) capable of generating midi events applicable to your vsti.

However, as far as I know, this kind of stuff only works offline.

So, what about a kind of Effect which would generate midi events (notes, velocity, etc.)LIVE? A virtual random player, in other words.

You might not see the point. But for me it would be a very interesting, experimental experimentation... Very Happy

Is it possible? does it exist somewhere?

Cheers

It's fairly easy to build something generating random controller info in Reaktor. Some of the more interesting ensembles by Rachmiel and others are based on randomization.
That's the only app where you can send random events as controller info in realtime that I can think of,though.

pure data. you can't do the same kind of math in reaktor (and why load a beast like that just to generate random notes)

i've made several random performance vst and vsti using synthedit ('scribe' synth, 'shoggoth' guitar, et al.) my host doesn't send midi between plugins, so i've never made anything just to generate midi events, but you can do it.

oh its worth it believe me - just listen to the "heis" series by Lazyfish etc or Rachmeil's "organism" series.

Xoxos - Shoggoth is amazing, just tried it - first Synthedit vsti I've come across that comes close to stuff done in SynC Modular or Reaktor. In fact the whole lot look very interesting, I'll try a few more.

Shoggoth is amazing, indeed. And it's really this kind of randomizer I'm looking for.

As for Reaktor, it is probably a great prog, but a it's also a bit pricy for me right now. Sad

If I understand you, xoxos, it would be possible to make a "universal" randomizer, but it wouldn't work in every hosts, depending on whether the host allows transfers of midi datas between vst plugins?

hmmm... It would be so cool, but I cannot see how, and which host can do that. Any hint Question

If it is possible, I would be so glad if someone would try to make the thing (just for my beautiful eyes, naturaly Very Happy ).

You can build something like this in FL if you have enough patience using keyboard controllers, peak controllers, formula controllers, Layers, etc. I've done it a few time for experiments. Remember, you can use FL as a modular studio because almost everything can be automated (tempo, pitch, keyboard tracking, volume, layer crossfades, etc).

If you would like some ideas, give me an example and i'll make it for you to show you Smile

Thanks for the proposal, smart. Smile

Actually, I don't know exactly what sort of example you are requesting here. I think xoxos'shoggoth (and scribe as well) have all the parameters we might want for a random player.

If you could just check it out, you'll find very clever parameter controls: bpm, gate, speed, pitch, octave, scale, etc.

You mentioned the keyboar/peak/formula controllers and I must admit I've never gone too far with them... Even basic examples (flp files) would be very helpful to me.

Cheers Smile

Another kind of random player I'm just imagining now would be a midi clip triggerer. Quite a different beast I guess.

First you create a bunch of midi patterns and then the machine plays them in a random order, altering (or not) the parameters.

Very experimental, but I like this kind of stuff Very Happy It reminds me Xenakis or other XXth century composers. Shocked

Smart, I was wondering if you had something for me? Embarassed

If you don't, no problem. I can stand it. Very Happy But it would be cool, mate.

As for my last idea (midi clips triggered randomly), I was thinking that the live mode of the FL Playlist could help me a lot.

Let's forget about the random thing. But is it possible to trigger the patterns live with my keyboard instead of my mouse??? I don't find the info in the help file. Sad

Cheers

Yes it is possible. Thanks to some lines found on the Techsupport forum I got the trick. I thought maybe some others might be interested. So I reply to my own question... Very Happy

What I was missing is that you have to assign a Midi channel for the Live Mode on the Midi settings page. Then just play with your keyboard connected to the correct midi channel and that's it. Coooool. Cool

i've just built a very simple MIDI note randomiser in synthedit that might be useful for you too..

Wopelka, you could use the fl formula controller and assign the pitch to it...

hey cbit, thanks a lot Smile

i've tried your thingy with EnergyXT (i didn't find out how to use it with FL Studio Confused ) and it's nice yet really... emmmm.... basic. Embarassed

It migt be interesting if you could add some parameters controls (pitch range, first of all, note length, arpeggiator mode etc.) in order to make it more useful.

Anyway thanks for sharing your hard work Cool

yeah, i think i tried it, but it was not really convincing.

what kind of params are you looking for? qeuro is kinda like scribe (+ plays in key, much lower cpu/ - on features and params)

scribe rocks, xoxox Cool

being able to use its "random engine" with other vsti would be extra top cool Smile

(if it's already possible i apologize but i can't figure out how to do it Embarassed )
