AuthorTopic: What FX to isolate instruments from a full mix?

Is it possible to isolate drums and/or the rhythm section out of a full mix?
It doesn't have to be perfect as long as the transients are clean enough to extract a midi groove file out of a short section (1 or 2 bars) using Recycle.
Somebody suggested that Soundhack spectral shapers should do the trcik but I have no addtional info....

I've never actually tried it, but I don't see why not, as long as the music isn't too dense and highly compressed/limited.

I would imagine you'd have to go in and manually edit the hit points to take out all the extraneous hits it would capture from the instruments though, and very probably the hats wouldn't be able to be isolated? But snares could well come through, and kicks might (if the bassline isn't too busy)

However..... I certainly wouldn't bet my house on it Confused In fact I probably wouldn't bet my garden shed on it either.

Gain? Can you elaborate on that?

Is there any way (apart from regular filtering/eqing)to remove extraneous sources in the arrangemenet that could mess with groove templates making?

If the drums are in the center you want to kill the stereo aspect and leave the mono. Use MDA image and set the stereo width to 0.

There used to be a pretty effective plug in called "Pandora RT" made by prosoniq which did an amazing job at boosting or reducing the voice in a mix - I think if it works for voice, reducing drums should be easier.

A stereo canceller should also be able to do the trick, though.

Pandora RT seems like a good idea, but seems to be Mac only.
I'll try the MDA thing though, sounds good Smile

Yes, I forgot about that - it's probably their only product that is neither available for the PC nor for VST Sad

Guess I'll write them another email - this thing was just amazing, they sure miss a business opportunity here...
