Alittle history of Flangers...

Flangers originated from Analogue tape machines... You would put the same exact signal on both reels, and slowly rock the second reel to 'almost' the same exact position of the audio source of the first reel. Once you got it close enough (2-6 millisecond, I think????, or is that chorus? Confused ), you'd hear a washy flanging sound. That delay between the two reels would ammount to how thick and deep your 'flanging' would be. Make sense? I'll go deeper if need be.

that's about it.

the flanging effect is caused by a very short delay, whose time is modulated to give that signature sweep.

A lot of effects are just delays. Reverb is a delay. Chorus is a delay. Flanger is a delay. Flanging delay time is a lot shorter than a chorus delay time though.

Last addition

the unproperly called "Comb fiters" are also delay based effects

The roadworks on the M25 is also a Delay.

M5 / M6 Junction 8... the mother of all delays!

Your flanger is created (as has already been stated) using a comb filter which is simply a delay buffer. By modulating with an LFO you get the flanger effect. I vaguely remember learning this shit at uni, apparently most effects are based on the comb filter, including your EQ's. I found this stuff very interesting but unfortunately the lecture was stupidly early in the AM, so I forgot much of it.

yes deranger, please go deeper... i only want to hear how it sounds, i dont understand all this delay 2,4sec stuff anyway... so when i try it it creats a basycly lowpasseffect... so, the flanger usually highpasses the sound and my lowpasseffect can set the basic where the highpass starts to a lowpass... if you understand this bullshit im talkin about please answer if this is right!
