Hi,

I am just getting into grainular effects via FL studios Granulator plugin. Its pretty cool but was wondering what else is out there in vst form?

I have heard that Kontakt has grainular capabilites but its a sampler not an effect plugin.

Thanks

Reaktor of course.

Most of these effects seem to be either old or from smaller software developers. Why aren't the big boys releasing any products?

Granular effects seem to be used alot in electronic drum beats from the warp crew and the likes so what software or hardware are the pros using?

Maybe I am missing something but it looks like granular is not getting any software love.

Please enlighten me on this subject..

Well, NI makes Reaktor, surely they're considered big boys?

Granular effects still tend not to fit mainstream sounds, same reason the big boys aren't developing low-level graphical audio development platforms like Max/MSP or PD. Many hosts and modular synths already have excellent granular facilities (Audiomulch, Ableton Live, Vaz Modular, the aforementioned Reaktor, etc) and many small devs have already filled the void.

Were you in need of a Waves or Digidesign granulator?

Steve.

the big boys (ie - the warp crew etc) all seem to use (or at least CLAIM to use) the low level stuff like PD / MAX/MSP / reaktor / csound / etc

I'll add Kyma and Supercollider to that list.

NDC's Buffer Synth Alpha is pretty cool IMO, or Buffer Synth 2 for the real intense stuff! Very Happy

The point I was trying to make is that although granular effects are not part of the mainstream, there seems to be a gap in the market where Ohm Force, Waves, Antares, ect.. could make an elegant, user friendly effect that could be a fresh idea in the standard world of software effects.

-I have played with the Graindelay effect in Live, but I sequence in Cubase so it does me no good. A port of this effect to vst would be amazing!!

-And I can't see taking the CPU hit to pull up Reaktor as a effect plugin to create grain effects. Is this really the king of Granular?

...errr... freesoft seems bad coder?

Wrong thought!!!

Smartelectronix (DFX, magnus, etc...) are really kings in granular FX, just try "suppatrigga",
y después te metes un chute por la vena pa chanar por un tubo con é!
(and then get some drug to use it reasonablee)

C'ya.

Well,if you want to do things like control grain size with an envelope,or control start points with a sequencer, the easiest way to do it is with Reaktor.
There's a lot you can do with granularity and Reaktor Smile

Yes it is unless you want to go Kyma. And most of the granular ensembles are relatively modest CPU wise - the big CPU hitters are the big multi voice synths like Kaleidon or effects with lots of fancy filters.

So everyone seems to be saying Reaktor is the way to go as far as flexibitiy.

Is Grainstates the only ensemble Reaktor has for Granular?
Are there any other recommended ensembles?

What is Kyma? Is it a vst?

There's lots of granular stuff for Reaktor.orange grains is a goodie, for example.
As to your other question;
Kyma

Well the Kyma package is way out of my price range so lets get back to Reaktor -

- What kind of CPU overhead could I expect, and how easy is the automation of reaktor as an effect.

- Also wondering if most people work offline with creating granular effects then chop it up into samples, or is it normally used with automation.

These questions may seem sillly but I am trying to wrap my head around how most people work with granular effects.

depends on the ensemble. There's probably more in Reaktor than you'll find anywhere else. Reaktor supports full automation, with very easy learn facilities.

you can do it either way. Reaktor is extremely flexible.

Xoxos also has a granular sampler called xsampler. I haven't had a chance to try it, but it seems like it does the trick. (And it's free).

It's funny, because for PCs, I would have said Audiomulch was the best, most flexible way to go for granular effects. Not a plugin though.

But for plugins, why shell out the several hundred dollars to get Reaktor if all you want is granular effects. The Smartelectronix plugins are fantastic, and free. Try KTGranulator, Sloper, Relofter, and Supatrigga. They'll fill a lot of the needs you might have for granular-type stuff.

The thing with Ohm or Voxengo or others not making granular effects, it still is a fairly saturated market for such a low demand niche effect.

Cheers,
Steve

If your after a non plugin then check these Csound front ends

and just to wind you up, I can confirm that Kyma has excellent granular tools and the quality of the sound is second to none Very Happy

If you're going to smartelectronix, make a stop in at destroyfx too - they have several plugs which give you amazing grain style fx (esp. bufferoverride)...

If you're thinking of buying Reaktor, take a look at Max/MSP (www.cycling74.com). Pretty cool that stuff.

Forever,
