I'm looking for some good free EQs. I feel somewhat limited by the 4 band graphic EQ in cubase sx1. is SX2 any better?
also I'm looking for a good overdrive to put on vocals to get that Julian Casablancas (strokes) sound. ideas?

Try nyQuistEQ, I use it all the time. MDA should also have a free EQ.
Can't help you with the overdrive.

Dunno about the OD. It seems to me that the Strokes dude's vocals are more an effect of EQ and filtering than from actual overdrive, but I could be wrong on that... vocals are my weakest area of expertise for sure.
Here are some Free VST I find I use Tracktion's native EQ a lot (which doesn't help you), but one of those might be to your taste. I use Kjaerhus a lot, though it's not a 'radical' sound-shaping tool. Greg

For that crispy vocal sound, use a compressor that has a heavy coloring effect. Like the free Blockfish from digitalfishphones.com - and smash the sound with it.
As for free EQ, I suggest you check out the Voxengo and Kjaerhus Audio ones.
