Hi everyone. I was just curious about whether anyone had any advice on effects. I'm trying to get a bunch of good effects together to compensate the the ones native to Cubase. I wouldn't say I'm interested in making any particular kind of music. Right now I seem to be writing stuff that sounds like psychadelic space neoclassical (at least, that's what it sounds like to me). I feel like I'm more or less covered for synths with NI Komplete2 and and Melohman: Symptohm, but not sure about effects.
So, I have NI Komplete2, which contians Reaktor, Spektral Delay, and Vokator (which I haven't really figured out yet). I also have Eqium, Firium, and Neodynium from Elemental Audio, and I'm in the group buy for all the Ohm Force plugs. Also Guitar Rig, although I haven't called it in yet for non-guitar effects processing. Does anyone see any gaping holes here? Reaktor covers a lot of bases; I've been using it for almost all my effects, especially compression, multi-band compression, reverb, and quasi-tube saturation (Programchild is the king). I like Spektral Delay for generating atmosphere and try to use it whenever possible. The Elemental Audio plugs are great sounding and have a clear UI. The Ohm Force bundle should keep me busy for a long time. But I was also considering getting into the Kjaerhaus Audio group buy for Golden Compressor/EQ/Modulator (I have the free classic series). Also thinking about a getting good reverb (Anwida Soft DX Reverb vs. Spin Audio RoomVerb M2), maybe a convultion reverb (or rather, impulses for SIR), and maybe Delaydots SpectrumWorx. I'd be particularly interested if anyone using Reaktor/Reaktor Sessions could comment on what non-Reaktor effects they use to complement Reaktor. I started out using Reaktor and Cubase, and it's hard for me to tell what I might be missing by relying on Reaktor so heavily. Kind of a nagging question. Thanks for any feedback.

i think yo got the most important bits already. if you get dissatisfied with one of your tools check a demo. but first get to know what you have.
there are some great freebies around too, like the Kjaerhus Classic stuff. and cheap quality stuff, like Voxengo Voxformer and Crunchessor.

Sounds like you've got most bases covered already.
You mentioned Kjaerhus stuff - GCO1 is one of the better comps around to my ears - certainly on my list of things to buy. Not sure if you need the Golden Eq if you have Firium etc though, unless you're a real Eq junkie and use it alot. If you're getting the OhmForce set, you're covered for distortions and filters etc, and certainly Ohmboyz is a tasty delay...personally I also use e-phonic's RetroDelay. If you're doing the spacey type thing, then RetroDelay has a completely different character to Ohmboyz. More earthy and grungy - it's my first choice for big dubby filtered delays. Ohmboyz for weird delays and more straight-forward pristine clean delays, RetroDelay for dubby delays. You mentioned reverbs. SIR is a good bet - I've since deleted all other native reverbs from my plugin folder. There are quite a few mediocre impulses, but I find the Eventide 4500 and the PCM91 impulses at 24bit wipe their combined arses with all other native reverbs I've tried (commercial or freebie). Recently I saw a 2016 Eventide roomverb thingy released....Robert sounded quite taken by it, and I take that as a good recommendation, as he's a reverb junkie with confirmed taste. That's next on my list of VSTFX to demo. Without getting into the realms of DSP card reverbs, I haven't liked any native reverb for general use. And especially if you're doing spacey music, then good quality reverb would be pretty useful I'd think. Native ones that aren't impulse convolution based generally are too muddy, or ringy, or plain artificial. The Eventide and PCM91 impulses are all to be had at the Noisevault - trial them out at 24bit against all of the other 16bit ones and you can't help but notice a big difference to clarity. The EMT ones are worth downloading too, although there aren't many unfortunately. Can't think of any other FX that you'd need to have - things like modFX you should be able to make some good'uns with Spektral Delay and Ohmboyz. Possibly some other tubey FX...Vintage warmer is not only good over mixes, it can spice up channels as well - or use MixSat instead. If you want weird'n'wonderful then you could do worse than to d/l a few TobyBear FX - don't have to spend money, and he can sure screw up sounds well. And maybe an honourable mention to Steinberg's GRM Tools for weirdness too - but I wouldn't class them as must-have FX.

Spektral Delay and the Ohm plugs-you really don't need any more. I've also found that a BBE(or other exciter/phase correction device)can help on Reaktor tracks, and the LUXONIX multieffect freebie works well for easy on the CPU effects with lots of options. Also, speaking of Reaktor effects, don't forget to look at the effects in Electronic Instruments vol.2-Cyan's a sweet chorus, and Resochord is just too much fun ew

DON'T WAIT! Just join on the OhmForce GB page and you'll see what your final price is. You still have to confirm then. Just make sure you click the box in the bottom (owners click here ore something like that) on the first page. Come tuesday 19/10/2004 it's too late to buy at the reduced price and get the bonus!

Thanks a lot for the thoughtful responses. I feel pretty good that I have a good set of effects. I'll check out those suggestions. And I definitely love Reaktor EI2, it makes me feel even better that I'm ridiculously invested in Native Instruments.
I'm also more than pleased that the Ohm Force Mega Group Buy was injected into this thread, since I've been checking the webpage compulsively every hour or so. It's so close to reaching the top discount, I'm getting nauseous.
Thanks again. |
