i adore Antares Tube. other's don't. it's a matter of personal tase. i like it cause it's simple, ultra low cpu, and used with the "blue' setting is subtle, but you can FEEL it. excellent

I tend to often go for ddrummer's Tubelimit to which I am unable to find a link to Perhaps not as warm but quite subtle and useful

What about voxengo Lampthruster and Warmifier?

i just googled for TLS Maximizer which is usually how I got back to daniel's site which is where Tube Limit was
and the site is dark with a single word visible 'end' looks like he may be down and out after that last thread about whether or not he should release his ultimate maximizer. another casualty of grim reality of the free provider? anyway i agree with the choice of Tube Limit and for something dirtier and grittier Grease Tube in the same family. before i could afford Voxengo I used Tube Limit and TLS Maximizer in my mastering chain -- not near as subtle as Voxengo, but did an incredible job for free.

Great Thread! I don't know the answer but I am evaluating:
-Voxengo Tube Amp (free) -DigitalFishPhones THD. Some of his compressors do warming also. (all free) -TbT audio's TubeLimit and GreaseTube (these plugs are free but may not be currently available - the developer recently pulled the latest web links as noted in this thread). Guitar Amp plugs like TubeBaby can also be good for vocals where the aggressive coloration from EQ may be a desirable artifact for the track... So far my favorite results have come from THD mixed with Voxengo's plugs. Are there any other freebies out there that are subtle?

Just use a filter to attenuate frequencies until your track starts to sound a bit 'muffled' and loses a bit of the top end. (yes, I'm kidding... sort of...) Greg

Thank you everyone who replied! And definitly thanks for the direct links! I had been using parametric equalization to attenuate the higher frequencies and simulate warmth... but the actual saturation that real tubes color the sound with is hard to emulate in that manner. Hopefully these new plugs will do the trick. Thanks again! |
