AuthorTopic: Best all round please - I'm tired of too many choices.

Hi folks. I realise that all these things are covered elsewhere, but I am looking for a ref point to slim down my ridiculously bloated vstfx folder. I wanna get down to using ONE prog for each of the following categories. That way, I can really get to know the kit, and focus on what really matters, the music, as opposed to trying to be a modern day Eno. So, I would appreciate your feedback as I start to compile the ultimate streamlined daw. (Only vsti native please, I am not interested in DSP cards)

NB: - Cost of these plugins is not relevant - I am working on a project and can manage to wangle the dough if I put the business case together. So ...

1. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND compressor?
2. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND reverb?
3. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND EQ?
4. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND Limiter.

ReaktorFX. I kid you not.

Or you could try the WaveArts bundle. ( Haven't tried it meself, but have heard good things about it.)

You will get about 20 different suggestions aking a question like that.

... possibly. But I'm looking for best all round as opposed to "best". Obviously all plugs have weaknesses, I accept that, but I need to slim down all the freeware, and budget comercial fx I have, and force myself to work with just one plug for each purpose.

Waves bundles though -are out. I appreciate that they are well respected, but certainly for my purposes, they are way overpriced.

Try Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter (freeware), Kjaerhus Peak Presser, and Voxengo Elephant - see which best suits you.

The Kjaerhus stuff is available with 30% discount as part of a KVR group buy - but you only have six days left to sign up. Includes Golden Compressor, EQ and Modulator (which is superb also).

Full a full featured set of plugs I would also consider adding to your list the PSP Nitro filter (wonderful stuff!).

I would agree with the suggestion to use Reaktor (or Reaktor Sessions). Staple effects from Reaktor and the user community include multiple reverbs, spring reverb, a compressor, and a multi-band compressor that are quite nice. Plus, of course, you'll get access to lots of useful stuff created by users, including some good channel effects, compressors/warmers, some spectral and granular effects, and lots of synths, samplers, and drum machines, etc.

I also recommend Elemental Audio's Eqium and Firium for equalizers. Lots of features and easy to use. I haven't auditioned a lot of EQs, but reviews of Eqium/Firium have been favorable.

Reaktor and the Eqium/Firium bundle were the first two commercial software products I purchased (after Cubase) and I worked with just those tools for over a year.

If price really is no object, I personally would consider the Waves bundle (Gold or Silver) or maybe a DSP thingie, like the Powercore (Firewire, or the compact version), UAD studio pack, etc. Probably not as much fun as Reaktor, but they can definitely be justified to someone who might provide funding for your project, IMO.

Good luck.

1. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND compressor?

Too many choices. All good for different things

2. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND reverb?

I use the one that was made by Ultrafunk - now Cakewalk (but Cakewalk never got in touch when they purchased the rights to the Ultrafunk line of audio effects) - so you should look at another reverb.

3. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND EQ?

Elemetal Audio EQ bundle, http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/639.html

4. What do u think is the best ALL ROUND Limiter.

Elephant by Voxengo http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/589.html

Best regards,

for the compressor, i love the tc. i just have to say it, it sounds so round and warm to me it feels right to use it almost everywhere : ) i wouldnt trade it for the waves, or tracks comp, but i guess that's just me.

My vote goes for:

Compressor - Kjaerhus GCO1 (seems to be a popular choice, which is good to see).

Reverb - Any of the impulse ones. May as well use SIR and save some cash. I would like to say Princeton 2016, but it's not really an all-rounder. But if you get SIR for free, maybe you can justify the PD2016 also.

Eq - Elemental Audio Eqium/Firium

Limiter - more difficult. Personally I'm quite happy with TLS Maximiser and Endorphin, but if you really want to spend some cash, then probably Kjaerhus PeakPressor.

why not get a dsp card and get rid of the native stuff?

UAD seems t oahve some good stuff and so does PoCo...(and you get some instruments as well)

...er, well, that's exactly what I HAVE been doing. Did you not get my point?

Rather than go through a whole mound of reverbs in order to find "something better" for a certain track, I wanna be forced to fully learn an individual plug. Hence, my desire to get 1 plug for each.

but isn't that the point - if you have them already why don't you force yourself to use just one and learn it? Let your ears decide which is best rather than listening to this bunch of monkeys...

Zzzzzzzzz. See, its downright rude to answer a question WITH a question. I - as the inquisitor - am in possesion of all the relevant facts. You - as the quizzed, are not. You are merely "helping someone with their enquiries".

There are many reason why I am taking this route. And whilst you may harbour a wish to know my bloody life story, other don't. ok? Wink
