Here's an unusual filter. I don't know whether it will be useful for your kind of music, but it's very interesting.

Liqih's Kaotica

There are lots more in KvR's effects section. Have a look, I'll bet something there will do what you want.

a really powerful search

You don't like the two filters already in SX2? Personally I love them to death...I've tried most other ones and I generally always return to the Cubase ones - they are fully automatable and the addition of the step sequencers in them is great. I find they're capable of all the standard filtering and some quite weird stuff too.

The only other filter I really want to try is the PSP Nitro. I could never get the demo to work on my previous system (something to do with Win98 I always assumed) but now I've got an XP wizzbang new PC, I must give it a go...PSP generally always do quality FX. But the Cubase filters come out tops against any freebies I've tried, and I never much liked the Ohm Force filters (personal preference only Confused ).

Another very good one is the TC Native one...but I really don't want all the other stuff included, and as far as I know, they only sell the filter in a package. But that is definitely a filter worth checking out.

The only other filter I ever use is my MS20....but that's a very expensive way of filtering I admit. Embarassed

exactly. there's already autopole and tonic included in sx. tonic is very smooth, but not very fat though I must admit, even at full drive. I'm actually not too keen on nitro, one of the psp effects I rarely use. Remember, the Tc native bundle has been discontinued, so there is no more support on it, and alot of the plugs have denormal issues. although you can find it cheap at alot of places becasue of this.

Exclamation I didn't know that. Have they gone completely to DSP cards or something?

Hmmmmmm...I might have to look into a cheap Native bundle then. Presumably the denormal thing won't apply to an AMD?

yep totally focused on powercore. the announcement was made some time ago. the denormal on amd's also, the reverb did when i tested the demo that's for sure (i am on athlon xp)...they are fully replaceable, don't be to concerned. There was even a thread abotu the denormals at cubase forums and tc acknowledged the problem and that an update was imminent, and then the announcement came and update never happened.

People rave about it, and I've never liked it. Too harsh for my taste. PSP Nitro I liked much better, and did a good 30+ presets for it. Very smooth.

HiHi

Wink If there was an effects processor I wish I could give you, it be the DSP4000 that I have. It's totally and completely up your alley for the mangling of audio kind. But I'm not parting with mine anytime soon.

i hear the 'too harsh' complaint very commonly about Quad Fromage, and don't quite get it.

were you only playing with presets? i think this perception of the QF is fueled by the fact that a great deal of the presets are using the per-band distortion function the QF offers.

why not give it another try, and roll your own dostortion-free preset, and see - i could be wrong though, you've probably already done that. anyway, nitro is smooth for sure but there's something i can't put my finger on that i don't like about the sound as compared to QF. hard to quantify? to me nitro sounds a little less dynamic, not as 'alive' (as a filter should), a little bit more plastic, flat and uninteresting. it still DAMN nice sounding, don't get me wrong.

anyway, maybe the difference in what I like is the harshness you are describing in QF. nice thing we have options in powerful filters for all our own personal tastes Cool

anyway, I know you have a good ear, why not give qf another spin, and make sure to try the different filter types with the distortion modules OFF

cheers

I'm a big OhmForce Filter fan, and Quad FrOhmage is on my wishlist.

i suspect that one of the reasons there is so much emphasis on distortion presets in the default qf bank, is that I'm certain that ohmie's were probably designing with sherman's famed QFM quad-filterbank in their minds, and the plan to stop all over it with the ohmforce qf HiHi

and the sherman being a gnarly, distortion-happy filterbank to be sure, hence the flavour of the qf presets.

anyway, i think it does both 'nice' and 'nasty' very well

It is a bit expensive, but my friend who works at Antares is always raving about it. To bad he can't get me a free copy Rolling Eyes Laughing

and here is just about every other filter out there:

The Ohmies have always been about mangling. That's cool, it's just not my thing. If I have a chance to check it out again, I might. I barely have time to write reviews these days, let alone write music. Smile Got to keep in mind that familiarity makes one love something a lot, and I beta tested Nitro and did presets for it. I'm just very familiar and comfortable with its workflow.

Never heard of that one...who makes it - I had a quick butchers at the FX list here with no luck.

I guess Google will be my next stop - you can never have enough filters. Wink

Crayon Filter is a nice little filter, but I'm biased. Wink To come within a matter of mere days will be the State Variable Filter. Very Happy

I'd feel bad about the gratuitous advertising, but... well... we give this stuff away! Smile

Filter algorithms by Paul of Exponent (ie. the coder of the Delta plug-ins). The Delta series are a great and often-overlooked series, too.
