I downloaded EnergyXT - I tested it for some time - I bought a license - I'm fascinated. Okay, that's the praise. But: I'm a beginner, and because of that I need a documentation. What Jorgen has made is - okay, the starting point. What Nicfit did - is a lot more. But that all doesn't make a documentation. So my proposal: Why don't you, Jorgen, set up a Wiki so the users can write a documentation step by step? The only thing you had to do is giving the documentation a structure. Is that realistic? Or has anyone an idea how a useful documentation could be made?

I remember that some times ago nicfit and some other ext power users were talking about doing a "real" doc for ext. But we don't heard about it anymore ... Anyway nicfit's tutorials are already a giant step compared to the "official" ext doc !

Wiki would be an interesting way to go.
I know that I said I was in for creating documentation - but that thread (& a couple of other threads that I said I would help on) got away from me at the same period of time. I got quite busy all of a sudden!

i think a wiki is a good idea. i'd love to see the documentation growing in a structured framework.

Another vote for a Wiki here. I think in the collaborative and sharing environment that is the EnergyXT community, a Wiki would be the best way to go, and would probably produce far better documentation than one man alone could.
Besides, this would free Jorgen up for more XT coding goodness -s

What is a "wiki" ? Was going to ask the above question when I thought maybe a Google search was in order and found this:- Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself. Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users. -------------------------------------- Hope that might be of some help to any other philistines like me out there One other thing - I noticed that, in this thread, there was contributions from Amsterdam, California, Australia and now me in little old UK. Makes me feel all warm and loving inside

I'm from France. EXT rules all over the world

Greetings from Germany. I don't think that EnergyXT rules, but it's a fascinating project. And it really enables me to make music...
You (all posters above) seem to like the idea making a docu as a wiki - but who will do that? Could that be NicFit - take a freely availible php-script, make that wiki, fill it with your great tutorials, add Jorgen's little help-system, take all availible info out of the update-section of Jorgen's website, exctract info from the forum - an than it will grow - and grow - and grow... And may be sometimes Jorgen decides to contribute...

>but who will do that?
Once it was set up, we all would. That's the whole point of a wiki. NicFit could add his tutorials and jorgen could add his help files. But then we could all add info about any intersting but undocumented features. You could add info about in-depth midi editing and I could amend your entries. It's anarchy (not really). But with dozens and dozens of authors, it's very likely to stay up to date and capture lots of currently 'hidden' features. |
