I may be imagining this (sorry, I'm new...), but is the internal routing of EnergyXT in VST mode 32-bit float?
I've set up two Amplitubes fed from two compressors fed from the audio in and then panned them L28 and R28, and I'm getting what sounds like digital clipping? I'm not really sure what's causing this, any ideas?

Perhaps the sum of the two signals breaks the +0db threshold?
Judging by my past experiences with software like Reason, a digital signal will clip when it passes +0db, so turn the volume down and see if it still sounds like its clipping.

if i don't fail in recalling my physics knowledge , 0db plus 0db equals +3db , so i have to agree with Amberience on this as a possible reason for the clipping.

The thing is, I don't think that should be happening, in that the same arrangement in Cubase wouldn't generate this problem (that's where the 32-bit float bit comes in...) but yeah, I slapped inspector into it and it was obviously shooting over 0db all the time. If that is what's going on, I can work around it, but it really shouldn't be happening.

There was a thread in the Tracktion forum a while back about how people thought that this same behavior in Tracktion was 'wrong'. It apparently has to do with the particular panning law that is implemented. Cubase has a choice of three different laws, so you should be able to get similar behavior out of it (not sure what the default is).
Check the Tracktion thread here.

Oh I don't if this is directly related but anyway, it seems that in Battery, if the master level meter clips, the output will clip anyway regardless of the hosts channel output levels... which is pretty stupid. like having a channel inside a channel so you have to monitor the levels of both.

The tracktion thread is quite interesting. I think that in fact the exact panning law isn't as important as the clipping. I tried sticking a compressor before the output and I just got fizz, suggesting again that some sort of clipping was occurring before it reached the compressor. Now, as I understand it, this shouldn't be happening.
(I'd point out that I'm still not sure it is happening, just that it's sounding more likely.) |
