I've been combing the internet for this information and I can't seem to find it anywhere. What are the MIDI CC's for the VST adapter (for automating FX, not instruments)? I can set it to listen to my controller and set the channel and such, but I haven't got a clue what the numbers are. Thanks for any help that you can give.

Did I ask a stupid question? I know someone out there knows the answer to this. I'm using the demo, and I'd like to buy it, but I can't do so in confidence unless I know how the automation is handled. Zero documentation is provided, and I can't find anything on the site about it. If I've got this totally backwards, please let me know.
Thanks, Nick | |

The controller numbers aren't documented because they're mapped to VST parameters (this much IS documented), but there's no standard as to how the VST parameters themselves are mapped. Most plugs -should- document this, but some do not.
Anyway, the adapter's controller implementation uses NRPN messages. You can see a readout of all the automatable parameters by going to the controller editor in SONAR and choosing NRPN. The parameters start at NRPN #00, and go up from there. Can you set your controller box to send NRPN messages?

Ah, thanks Angus. I did have it backwards all along. I was thinking the wrapper was the one that was going to respond to the automation messages, allowing you to automate any VST plugin through it's own interface, but in fact all it's doing is passing them along, so if the plugin can't automate natively, it won't do it in the wrapper either. Thanks for clearing that up.

If the plugin can automate with VST parameters (almost all can), the wrapper lets you automate it with NRPNs... so the wrapper is doing more than just passing it along in that case. on the other hand, some plugs have their own MIDI CC implementations, and in those cases the wrapper passes CC messages along so you can use the plug's native automation.

Hi Angus,
I have a controler that sends only CC. Is there a way I could control in real time a plug that does'nt have CC implementation? I have ver. 4 Thanks, Dan.

Maybe there's an MFX-based MIDI transformer that will do it for you? Would seem like a useful thing to have in any case.. if there isn't one already, would be a good suggestion for the various MFX developers.
You can control a plug from CCs actually, but only using the adapter's direct MIDI input (bypassing SONAR). The reason we didn't include CC->VST Parameter automapping on the Adapter's DXi-MIDI interface is that various CCs are reserved for performance features (sustain switch, modulation, data entry, bank select etc.) and there aren't enough left over for automatic mapping (we might do MIDI Learn or manual mapping with certain CCs in future). Also, NRPNs give you 14-bit precision whereas controllers usually only give you 7-bit.

Thank you Angus,
Midi learn would be very usefull. Dan14. |
