AuthorTopic: Does every sequencer hang midi notes???

Been demoing all the major host sequencers before I spend my money on the Sonar 3 upgrade. I was hoping ver 3 would end Sonar's tendency to create ghost notes and hanging midi notes, particularly in loop mode and while driving softsynths. Well, it's not looking good...it might even be worse (though it does look good Wink ).

Now I'm trying Tracktion, and that tendency is greatly reduced...but not non-existent. I've read of other users experiencing it in Tracktion, also.

Haven't had any problems in Muzys/CMuzys, but I haven't thrashed muzys yet. Ditto for FLS.

So my question is this: does every sequencer hang midi notes, or create ghost/phantom notes occasionally??? Does anyone never experience this? Is there a source/solution that is common across the platforms?

Your input would be helpful.

Mark

I've never had that problem Confused
If you're using a USB interface,I'd be willing to bet that it's the hub shutting down to conserve power(XP's notorious for this).Go into device manager, and go to the properties for your USB hub(s).Under power management, uncheck any options.See if that helps.

SONAR is actually getting better about that. They *introduced* wacky loop problems around the time of 2.2 (I never had issues with it before then) and have worked most out by 3.1 if you shorten your MIDI buffer time (the default is generally too large). Most, mind you, not all.

Annoying, yes...

Some soft synths are just more prone to hanging notes due to sloppy implementation of the MIDI spec. I've found this to be the case with UVI-Engine synths, in particular.

And here's the obligatory plug for my MFX Sustain Fix plugin... Wink

I don't think there's a single sequencer that I've used that NEVER hung a note somewhere! Tracktion is pretty good about it but there are issues with ReWire devices and hung notes (in my experience), when I had SONAR it would hiccup on occasion, Cubasis back in the day was OK, and the two apps I've had the least trouble with are Orion Platinum and Logic on the PC.

I think that, due to the various ways various modules handle note-off/all-notes-off/sustain messages it's almost impossible to insure that it NEVER happens.
