Well,
After making some posts on how to create ambient/atmospheric sounds, I have certainly been given many options. Many have told me to get a wavestation. Others have suggested Reaktor. Let me tell you that I have finally come across something that I am in awe of - the Distorted Reality sample cd. Holy shit! Such beautiful sounds! This is going to simplify things greatly for me! Instead of worrying about programming a synth, I can just use this sample cd with gigastudio! I am very psyched right now - can you tell?!??! -brian

I am not ready to record anything yet, but here is a list of gear used on the cd:

Not much fun to just copy sounds from a CD though

I don't doubt it's a good CD, but wouldn't it be more fun to create your own soundscapes?

I wish I could create my own soundscapes, but right now I don't have the knowledge to do so. I am a guitarist and the music I am writing will be guitar oriented. That is where my originality comes into play. I just want to hurry and get some songs recorded because I have tons of ideas in my head. And then afterwards maybe I will take a step back and learn to do the synthesis. But the Distorted Reality cd is quite vast - and by adjusting filter parameters, etc I can modify the sounds.

Just because the original sounds come off a cd doesn't mean you can't tweak them further! I load them into the Pulsar modular synth & go crazy with 'em in a way that you just can't do anyway else, & I'd bet that all kinds of possibilities are available from Linn Plug's sample synth.
Most of the sounds on Distorted Reality were made to a large degree with Metasynth & many others were done by using techniques that most of us can't or wouldn't want to do, such as running sounds through leslies or purposefully blowing tube amps & recording through them.

Hello,
I too admire Distorted Reality - Eric Persing is obviously a very talented sound designer. Perhaps those twinkly sounds could be achieved by creating an arpeggio of short brite FM notes done in a certain key and then pitch shifted up with some mild delay. For analog sounds, the Pro52 can make some nice pads, try putting these through a bunch of plugins. Also, try layering those results with spots of granular synthesis debris from Granulab or audiomulch.

...I forgot the best:
Native InstrumentsīSpektral-Delay! This plug is incredible! Something really new I think, of course it combines wellknown sections (filter, Delay, LFO..). But itīs the way it is done here - and so "funny" to use. Check out the demo-version, of course Spketral-Delay requires some time to fully understand and use it. Yep! putte

I also like this DistortedReality-Disc, but prefer creating my ambiences on my own.
There are many good hints (and plugs) about that. For example PiWarp from Prosoniq: Really good to create strange atmospheres, thatīs what itīs made for suppose. But even with just a huge reverb and/or delays (I prefer tape-delays, like Karlette or Logicīs TapeDelay) good sounds can be done. Just try to have reverb and/or Delay in insert (or bus..) and and turn up the parameters - make it huge and wide in your stereo. (I love those tapedelay-feedbacks.. Afterwards I sometimes bounce this signal and reverse it, also sounds nice. And by using timestretschers in a very extremely slowdonw-way there are also interesting results. (I very often combine those steps to get a very original sound in the end....) If you want an harmonic and more warmer soundscape, try out OrangeVocoder for example. nice day.. putte

Hey bhuether, I suggested a bunch of steps you could use to create ambient pads on your Pro52, remember? Well, since some of the folks on this thread suggest you mess with your samples a little, may I remind you that you can use the filter and effects sections on your Pro52 as an VST effects plugin, which you could use to electonicize/psychedelicize your samples very easily. Check it out!

Bit of a hard knock here, but my guess is that old bhuether takes drugs in abundance and looks for sounds that match his dreamy state, ie, one lazy guitar pluck equals an eternity of undulating sound, with Beethoven thrown in at the end. And everyone else is taking him seriously.
If I'm wrong I'll wholeheartedly and unreservedly apologise.

Hey kevvv,
Go check out my recordings at www.geocities.com/b_huether/recordings.html Does it sound to you that I am not serious? If so then looks like you are taking some sort of drug that inhibits recognition of talent. By the way, presumptoous people have no credibility in this world. Go find yourself another world so that a worthy individual can breathe the air that is being wasted by your lungs. regards, brian

I don't do drugs, but I was a bit pissed last night.
I went too far. I apologise.

Agreed !
This CD is state of the art. (But not the new CD DR 2) Also go and try "Sound Spectral" from best service. As wonderfull as Distorted Reality Read the test here: http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/sep00/articles/sound_sample.htm CU |
