AuthorTopic: Cinema show synth sounds

i want to play this Genesis song Cinema show (from selling england by the pound album 1974), in the second part of the song, Tony Banks plays a synth solo. Do somebody have Pro-52 patches (or another VST-i but i think it will be good with this one)with the 2 synth sounds use in this solo. I will be eternally grateful.

Or tell me how can i set this sound on Pro-52 or mercury or Model-E if you know how to reach these sounds. I thinks that Tony Banks used an ARP Odissey, not sure, but i 've seen it on pictures.

Thanks in advance

FYI: Tony Banks originally used to use an ARP Pro Soloist (most likely what he used on "Cinema Show), and then moved on to an ARP 2600 (check out http://www.netcontrol.fi/~jocke/genesis/gallery.htm for a visual list of his gear over the years).
The Pro Solist (if I remember right) was a single-oscillator synth, so that may be all you need to cop the sound (haven't heard the tune in a while...sorry!)

Berny,

Anything to help a fellow Genesis fan!

I think I know what sounds you mean... listening to it now. If it's a cd, could you send specifics when it appears (time?).

I can't do this now, but if you can wait a couple days maybe I can fiddle around with the Pro or the Model E and e-mail you a patch. I may or may not be successful but hopefully I will be! :-)

Definitely sounds like a single osc to me. If it's the sound I think it is, I would start by maybe picking one of the trumpet- or oboe-like patches. Then turn down osc b in the mixer section (get rid of it since we know we don't want to use it and so it doesn't confuse matters in this case). Next experiment with the waveforms and see which waves or combinations of waves seem to sound closer in character to what you're after. (Try sawtooth by itself). Then start making adjustments on the envelopes and the filter controls.

Do all of this while you're listening to and analyzing the sound you're after and after a while you'll find yourself there. At any rate, that's how I usually do it. Used to be a lot easier on the real thing (both Prophet and Mini) where you could "feel" your way to a sound - a bit more difficult when there's a mouse involved.

I was lucky enough to be able to play around with an ARP 2600 like this back in my school days. The ARPs did have a distinct tone completely different from the Moogs and later the Prophets. I suspect approaching this from the Pro 52 (or even the Model E), you're going to want to make the sound a bit "thinner" to get what you're after (hence killing one of the oscillators). Open up the filter cutoff a bit, etc.

Good luck.

Please let us know if you have any luck, otherwise, I will try to sit down with this during my lunch break over the next couple days and give it a go as well.

Thanks for all guys.

Liondream, i will try to program these sounds, in a couple of days. I'll tell you the results. I will mail you the time on the CD where you can hear the sounds.

Thanks again.

It would be nice to post a small mp3 fragment somewhere with
this sound, to get the idea...

Sounds monophonic, glide=On, Glide time=short.
Unison mode on. Probably soft saturation on a saw,
triangle (or combination of those) Likely a little
chorus and reverb eff at the very end. The sound is not
static, so some modulation (LPF?) is there.
Try to do something like that in SM.

Try to get the "Banks.zip" file from my page:
http://home.mindspring.com/~ikaldor/ikhome.htm

This is a SynC Modular ens. Could be a startpoint.
You need the SoftStick also to control it, also on my page. (free)
Is it closer to Tony Banks's tone?

Thanks for your answers... but, Ik i don't have Syncmodular, and Kevvvv i don't have Vaz too. Vaz seems interesting but it's not a vst-i...

That's why i try to dit with pro-52, and by the way, i don't have reaktor... i'm not able to create an easy sound in pro-52 so, imagine with reaktor

I used to have an ARP AXXE. Wonderful synth.

The closest I've ever heard to an ARP is VAZ http://www.software-technology.com/frames.htm

The freebie demo is impressive and worth the download to try out.
