AuthorTopic: presets/banks >fxb to fst?

Hi. I'm trying to change cubase presets (fxb) for the mighty Tau Pro vsti to fruityloops presets (fst). How does one go about that? I imagine u could open up the synth in the Q and fruity then dial in the same settings in fruity before saving preset as fst but with 50 patches how long is that gonna take?

Hi steve
I don't use Tau or fruity so I'm shooting in the dark
a bit on this one . I know its a long winded pain

but I think the way you said is the only way. Unless you
know any programers that could write a little utillity
to convert one file to another . I may be wrong but I think
most preset files are basicly just a text string. Try this
if you are curious . Copy a fxb file to a new folder so that
it doesn't matter if you delete it after and you still have the origenal nice and safe where it belongs , now change it's
extension from .fxb to .txt then open it in windows note pad,
you should see a string of text and symbles.
Now for a developer to write a utillity to convert fxb to fst
they would have to know what parts of the string relate to which
parameters of Tau . To do this I think they would have to initialise everything on the Tau, save and copy the preset
then increment one parameter of Tau by one step and save and
copy the preset, then change .fxb to .txt for both of these
presets and open them in note pad and look for what part of
the string has changed , make a note of it then repeat for all
the other parameters so that you get a profile of the string.
Then do the same for fruity. With this information a programer
could write something that reads the settings in the Tau string
and then overwrites these settings onto an initialised fruity
string at the relevant places for parameters that are common to both synths , this new string is then saved as .fst and loaded
into fruity.
I know this is also long winded , so you need to choose the
lesser of the two evils. But if you had a utillity it would always be usefull for the future and other Tau - Fruity users
might like one to and it could be developed further to work
with other synths e.g convert Pro-52 to Model E presets.
But only for parameters that are common to both.

Regards
Raven

mmmmm interesting! thanks 4 the reply Raven! I had a look. Yes they (fxb+fst) do come up as text files. Now the interesting bit is that apart form the 'header' which in the fruity patch for example goes along the lines of - FLhd 0 ` FLdté Ç3.1.1 ÉFruity wrapper Ô4 - the rest of the files are identical!!! So they essentially use the same 'format'? The bones of the patch seem to be a string of question marks and spaces eg - ? ? ? That's Flemish to me I don't know programming atall but this suggests that if I carefully substitute a cubase header with a FL header in the txt file then convert back to fst FL will read the patch?!! I am off to try it and if it works I'll report back. A utility to do this would be so simple I'm sure but I haven't the foggiest how to program a utility

how would u go about changing a .txt file to say a .fst file????

I'd try simply changing the extension first.

1. Save off the opened .txt file as "tau.txt"
2. In your explorer window, highlight the name, and change to "tau.fst"
3. Go to your audio host and try to open it.

If all the data in the .txt file is right, it should work.

Worth a shot...

thanks brittnel I got it this way - select 'save as' in txt file and find a fst file and over write it. this saves it as fst but as of yet I canne get this 'preset' to change any settings of the Tau it has no effect when loaded. will keep trying.
