AuthorTopic: Can any VSTs play .gig files?

Hello. I was wondering if there are any VSTis that can play .gig files. Gigasampler just doesn't behave properly on my computer, but I LOVE some of the strings samples that are available for it. Can I use .gig files in any VSTi out there?

TIA,

Joe

No, as far as I know there isn't a VSTi that can read .gig files. So that means the .gig files must be converted into another format to be able to load them into one of the existing VST samplers. Awave Studio v7.3 can read .gig files and convert them to SoundFonts for example. But I've read that Awave loads the .gig files into RAM, so there's a major problem if you want to convert .gig files that are larger than your RAM. And I guess that will be the case with most .gig files. Unless you've made some small ones yourself.

If you're simply talking about the files getting loaded into ram during the process of conversion, wouldn't the swap file take care of this? Can't Awave convert files to Akai format, too?

Are .gigs that big? Never seen a .gig that was bigger then my available ram.
And no, I don't think awave uses the swapfile. Windows will transfer memory blocks to the swapfile when the program got inactive. But the memory blocks have to be first in the memory...
Unless awave have programmed smart... But I don't think so, if they where smart, they streamed big files in stead of loading the whole file it in memory...
I not sure of course, cause I don't use .gigs and awave...

I've got plenty of ram (512mb), so it's not a problem.

Ok, I've got Awave, and when I open a .gig file, I get three "key" folders, for one .gig file, and in those key folders, I get A TON of individual samples. How do I convert ALL of those into SF2s? One at a time?

Sure does and very well, even on a Mac.

I think there's a piano .gig file that's 1.4G or something like that, and a few more that are over 1G. I hope more samplers start supporting the .gig format now that streaming from disc is becoming common.

Thank you very much for your replies. I'm going to check out Halion 1.1.
