Hi everyone,
Is it just me or have I got some kind of point? I mean, I worship the ground Cubase breaks, but as for Model E, Voice Designer, LM-4, especially VB-1; I find the GUI's and sounds produced really lack a certain je ne sais quai. I know Steinberg really concentrate on the high end of things, but these plugins really could be a lot sharper and should really sparkle. Especially for the cash. Anyone know what I mean? These synths really look like old beasts from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I think cobwebs should be added to the GUIs using Photoshop. Reg

VB-1's OK for free, I've never liked Neon though! As for LM-4, it kinda sucked from the outset, but it was the first commercially available VSTi after all, I think Steinberg didn't really think it through properly, I mean editing script files to create a n instrument in the year 2000 (or was it 1999?). Time for a v2 update I think, with full editing options and envelopes, filters, etc. And it should be free to all the suckers that purchased the original As for Model-E well I like it, the interface is nice and very usable and the sound is pretty good in the mix, though a lead synth it ain't IMHO. I haven't tried HALion and Voice designer so I can't comment on those, I'd love Hal but I just can't afford it I think a lot of people would disagree about Cubase being great too; it’s got its fair share of bashers after all, not me though I do love it. A friend has got Nuendo and he loves that, multiple undo's mmmmmm, lovely!! I don't want to be a defender of Steinberg here but Wavelab is fantastic!! I used to be a Soundforge fan but Wavelab 3 converted me!! Please note these are the comments of a madman, possibly

I think Steinberg are doing a great job. I love HALion and Model-E. Two of the best VSTi ever made if you ask me.

i wrote like a two page post of comment/semi-reviews of all of the aforementioned plugs, but deleted it because i think it sounded too self-absorbed/critical. heh. i always start to wonder when i start rambling on a post [ 25 September 2001: Message edited by: exponent ]

I'm a Logic user (for compatability reasons) so I really don't know anything about Cubase. But I do know that I use Quadrafuzz on practicly everything
| exponent | Posted: 25th September 2001 12:39 |
why would quadrafuzz make you a steinberg fan? wasnt it developed by some third-party and steinberg is just the distrubuter/licence holder?(correct me if im wrong) lots of "steinbergs" plugs are that way, it seems like the ones they dive into on their own from scratch are the ones that end up a little messed up.. haha maybe "quirky" would be a better word

"quirky" is a very good expression for some of the Steinberg stuff :-)
And "exponent" was right, a lot of Steinberg programs are to at least to some extent coded elsewhere and "licensed" to Steinberg. Check out www.spectral-design.com for the most prominent example Also, Wavelab is a program that is in large parts coded by one single person, Philippe Goutier (PG), a very cool french guy. So I don't know if you can generally say that Steinberg stuff is awful or great because dozens or more developers are involved. Sure, you could check out every "about" screen, write down the names of these guys and who did what and then make a checklist who made the most "quirky" stuff, but I think that would go a step too far :-) Ciao Toby www.tobybear.de

I don't think Steinberg look in here much.
They look in at cubase.net where a lot of the threads are about recording, or newbie snags, but not a lot on VSTIs, which is a whole different music-making approach. I suspect that we're fairly irrelevant to Steinberg here at KvR. Anyone recall Steinberg dropping in here?

Good to hear.
Be nice if they could show their faces the way Omar at NI does. He creates a good impression for his company with his helpfulness. |
