Hey guys I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'm looking for a synth sound or advice on how to create a patch that sounds kinda like the synth blurbs all over REMs new album, especially All The Way To Reno. Or even better the similar synth sound on the chorus of Wilco's Heavy Metal Drummer off thier yet to be released album. Usually when I'm looking to program a synth sound I find something close to the sound in my head then tweak from there till I get it right, or resonably close. In this case I'm having trouble even doing that. Anyway I'm working on a project at a friends house, who has a much better setup than me in regards to VSTis, so if someone could give me some ideas as to what VSTi I should use or even could come up with a decent patch I'd really appreciate it. Trust me if it's a good VSTi this kid has it. Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place and I know it's a rather specific request but any help at all would be appreciated.

Could you post sound files up of what you're looking for?
Without hearing what it is you're looking for, my guess would be to try M-tron. It's a recreation of the mellotron which seems to be used in a lot of Beatles-influenced pop music (like REM).

I've already got the M-Tron (and love it), but the tracks in particular I'm looking for are off of REMs new album Reveal, where they've been using a lot of synthesizers. I just love the synth programming on the record, and want to know how I can get close to some of these sounds. The problem though is that the synths don't sound very analogue at least to me, and as most VSTi synths are analogue I question how close I can actually get. I've been trying to play around with Waldorfs PPG Wave, which has the most digital sound of any VSTi I've played with so far, but still haven't gotten close to the sounds I'm looking for. Any help at all would be appreciated. |
