I have several reviews on (free) mastering plugins on my website. You can jump directly to the review index: http://www.orion-central.com/vst.shtml

Freeverb Too or Freeverb.

There's plenty of free compressors, EQs, limiters, and reverbs out there. That's all there really is to mastering (sure reverb on occasion), aside from fade ins and outs which can be done in sequencer. Unless you want a plug-in that does all of these in one format. Well anyway I found a really good mastering setup to be the Waves C4, then the Steinberg Q-Metric (or the TL Audio EQ), and then the Waves L1. You might wanna add a tape simulator or something to warm things up, as well as the odd reverb. But I found that this general combo really keeps the clarity of the mixes in tact while polishing everything that needed it. It's a pricy setup though, at least for me it is, so do what I did find a friend who has this stuff and do the mastering at his place.

Sorry about halfway through my post I forgot you were looking for free plugins. Anyway just look for a nice and trasparent compressor (multi-band if you can but not necessary) a parametric EQ, and a Limiter. And remember your looking to keep as much from the origianal mix as you can so you wanna get the most transparent plug-ins possible. Try out a few freebies that other people recomend and constantly A/B everything you do, if your mix sounds worse after you add that compressor (or whatever) play with the settings some more or find one that works better. When mastering yourself, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to screw something up.

Hi TristezaOrange
Crimsonwarlock is right, but specially look at this: http://www.orion-central.com/reviewpspmixpack.shtml Yes I know, these are commercial plugs, but absolutely worth the price. I really can't remember how I mastered before I purchased these PSP plugs. Ah, I forgot... mda is always very interesting: http://www.maxim.abel.co.uk/vst/ And don't forget to download the synths if you don't still have them Pepe [ 04 September 2001: Message edited by: Pepe ]

There is a great freeware mastering processor. It's called Endorphin and it is a multi-band compressor, combined with analog modelled saturation circuitry. Follow the link in my previous post, I've got it reviewed there and there is a link to the developers website at the bottom of my review. There is already a newer version that the reviewed one so you can pick it up at the publishers website.

Predatohm is literally out this week for $9.95 (I know. It's not quite free).
"It's a multi-band compressor and multi-band distortion, it can add just a little punch, recreate ol'good tube amp sound, or heavily distort the sound in a way never heard yet." Just bought it. Going to try it out now.
