AuthorTopic: Cheaper alternative to DR-008 drum synthesis??
Transient
Posted: 4th September 2001 17:53
Having listened to (and been impressed by) my friends Dr-008 (modules ?) I was wondering if there was any cheaper alternatives to this kind of drum synthesis....the sound is so much more cleaner than using samples.
Thanks

I've been having fun with the drum synth in Orion. It's not anywhere as powerful as the DR-008, but it still lets you create drum sounds (to a degree) rather than just using samples. Plus you can run 10 signals to the Orion mixing board and add different EQ, pan, and effects to the different drum sounds.

Fresh Killed Beat or cesSynth 5 (I think)

Good, purely synthetic drum sounds. A bit high on CPU usage though (10-15% on my PIII 700/Logic setup). Try 'em out....

Or if you've got the cash - Waldorf Attack. I haven't seen a bad review of this thing yet. Better sound quality than the above too.

Cheaper still, i.e. free, get MDA DrumSynth to make synthetic drum samples and load into Loopazoid or Linplug RMF.

For making synthetic drum samples for me the best is Stomper Hyperion. Going to review it next month. Don't have the url at hand but if you do a search on the name it will pop up. Oh, and it is freeware

AFAIK mda's Drumsynth is basically the standalone version of the Drumsynth008 module (written by mda)in DR-008.

Yeah, sort of. The standalone DrumSynth is pretty old now and has a rougher sound than drumsynth008, but is a bit more versatile for making stuff like sound effects because of the graphical envelopes.

drumsynth008 includes some 909 samples and concentrates on doing the 808 and 909 and other analog drum machine sounds.
