AuthorTopic: Any good VSTI's for strings?

Hey!

I really like a lot of these "single purpose" VSTIs (I.E. B4, MDA piano, etc..

Does anyone know of a good one for (bowed) string sounds?

It seems to be about the last dedicated VSTi that I need...

Or/Perhaps a good patch for pro-5, or a good free sample available on the net that I could use with a VSTI sampler?

Or, perhaps a (freeware polyphonic) sound font player?

I am pc, and still and using VST V3.72. I am not upgrading to version 5 until I get a much faster computer, so don't even mention the universal sound module thingy.

Help much appreciated!

Realistic strings can't really be synthesized easily (although AAS's Tassman can get pretty close for a synth) so you're better off with samples. I don't know of any free ones, but there are some great inexspensive samplers that can play soundfonts. And there are plenty of free soundfonts available on the web.
I don't know if this helps or not, but that's about all I can think of.

The sound site

Soundfonts

63mb Squidfont Orchestral Soundfont (I think it's only about 23 or so meg packed)

Best 'real' Orchestral sounds I've heard out of a soundfont.

There is a virtual modelled bowed string ensemble for Sync Modular that is completely incredible.

Try with RetroAS-1 ( vst or rewire )... it has good possibilities of generating warm hard basses and perfect strings pads sounds ( the patch monolitych strings is perfect for any professional purpose ) and also generating strange effects...

Try searching their site for Squid - I found it but can't post the direct link to it here as this board doesn't allow brackets - ( - in URL's for some reason ??

Check out this FTP - ftp://www.thesoundsite.net:2021/Fonts/Soundfonts%20Compressed/

Yah.

I did the logical thing. I sent bismark their $30 registration fee and got my password for the BS-1. I shoulda done it months ago, so I'm off to download some soundfonts myself.

Thanks all,

whew!!!....28meg dl for the Squid pack....not a lot in these days of dsl but a bit much for me on my 56k....still...their offer of a 7cd set of soundfonts for $49 ('bout 30 quid) is just a bit to irresistable for me....gotta get it
.
PS

BS-1 seems really cool.

It's a no B.S. (if you'll pardon the pun...) VST soundfont player.

It has Pretty excellent control over the soundfont playback...um...stuff, including an envelope deal, oscillator thingy and vibrato, plus all the usual tuning stuff.

It seems really cool, and I like the idea that if somebody wants some strange sound, all I have to do is a quick search and download and I can get it.

....and I got my strings.

(...a word aside...we're, like, 2 years into the vsti thing, and still it's all (99%) analog synths. Those are great, but I have plenty, thank you. It's kinda silly that there aren't more instruments for "natural" or "acoustic" sounds. What is this mindset? Where are the free thinkers? When is the revolution? I've been watching for it on t.v...)

It's good. It's cheap. It's necessary. Go get it.

No, I don't work for bismark...

Bismark sounds good when you first get it, but once you get into it and have 8 of them running at once, it becomes hell trying to remember which one of those "little boxes" is which instrument. So confusing.

So get VSampler instead. Better still, VSampler Pro.

Gotta agree with you there...the analog sound is getting used less and less in my music and things like strings, pianos, flutes and geetars more and more (yes...I do listen to Moby alot and love the direction his music is taking).
And yup...BS-1 rocks....it runs a treat under FruityLoops, bringing a whole new world to the little sequencer(still my favorite).
Peace
