Can anybody suggest where i could produce a decent, loud, bass drum kick?
I have many various instuments availible + a Yamaha sw1000 sound card but i am still unhappy about the Drums availible. Any suggestions would be very helpfull. Cheers

If you are considering using samples then you can check out my Page About ten of them are kick drum sounds, very hard and created "the old way" If you want to use softsynths then i suggest you try the QuadraSid for that kind of sound

I agree with Autodafe! QuadraSID from reFX is absolutely great for this and MUCH more. I think you want to use the sound in a percussive context, it means with other drum sounds like hihats, snares etc., right? My suggestion: FXpansion DR-008 (http://www.fxpansion.com/), definitely the best choice and a good investment if you want to create MUSIC. Don't forget to download Mysteron at FXpansion, not exactly the best tool for bass drums... but fun.

Go to www.e-lab.se and register for their free downloads and you can pick up some really nice percussion samples there, they even have specific house set that comes with 100 bassdrums or something, so, you should be able to find more than one you like, and they come in packs so you don't have to download individual stuff.

synthesize your own. all a dance *or most any other* bd is is a sine wave (or filtered square, saw or triangle wav) with a quick pitch envelope at the beginning of the sample(and maybe some filtered ambient noise, or clicks for the attack/ambience, usually at the beginning of the sample/synthprogram). with just soundforge or well, any combination of software(cooledit, or any audio editor, mda drumsynth/stomper/simple wave generator), you can produce infinite drums like this, and not generic basterdized samples from someone else! even if you use someone else's samples, it's best if you apply a compression ratio and a pitch envelope on the sample yourself in order to make it your own thing. i have made thousands of custom kicks/snares(and most everything else). just my 2 1/2 cents

Kalava Drum Archive (http://hem.passagen.se/lej97/kalava/) is a great resource with lots of sampled drums.

May I suggeset sticking your kick drums through CamelPhat - you can download if for free from http://www.camelaudio.com. It's pretty much ideal for heavy kick drums. In particular, try turning up the 'tube' setting. Apologies for the blatant self publicity, but in this case I think it could be what you're after. Let me know what you think.

Hi ben, i've got the freeware version of camelphat and it does really work well for this sort of thing, and not just kicks either

Glad you like it! If you (or anyone else) has any suggestions for how I could improve it - please let me know. In particular, I'd like to know what I'd need to add for people to want to fork out for the Super version. Also, I'm always interested to hear suggestions for new effects/synths.
(I'm planning to add a frequency gate feature, which you can apply to only a particular range of frequencies, with the rest passing through unaltered. I'm also going to add attack and release to the filter envelope).

quote: Like the Sound Forge noise reduction? If so, that'll be absolutely amazing, especially if you can give it a similar "learn" function (where the user feeds it a short sample of the material they want to get rid of -be it noise or even instruments- & the program analyzes it & removes those frequencies).

I sure hope you are making some seroious cash out of your music cos you deffinately have the brains to do it!!! Nice one.. z_loader - I think the reason you weren't getting through is because of the full stop at the end of the URL! Go to www.camelaudio.com and it should be there. BTW its an effects plugin, not a synth, but I reckon you could put a really weedy kick drum in, and it would come out sound really phat. Maybe I should do a before/after for the website.
uncle e - I think maybe I didn't do a good job of describing the new feature. What I'm talking about is a feature like that in cubase 5, which allows you to only allow frequencies in a certain band to get passed through to the effects, leaving the remainder unaltered. This would allow you, for example, to put a bit of tube distortion on the bass, leaving the remainder unaltered. Ben |
