Had this idea for a while now, but no one ever takes it seriously. Here goes:
A plugin which chops a waveform (WAV, AIFF etc) into equalateral segments and then rotates each one randomly through either 90, 180, 270, 360 degrees (thus some segments will be reversed, some will be sideways). Cool or what?? | |

Sounds like granular synthesis to me......
AudioMulch can do that. For more straight forward chopping up and reordering of soundfiles you might also want to try BombThatBeat or Vellocet ReOrder. [ 09 October 2001: Message edited by: Collusion ] | |

Yes, maybe it could be implemented through granular synthesis, but the effect would be like nothing currently available. Firstly, the segments would all have to be equalateral - they can;t be of varying lengths. Secondly, the segments can be shifted sideways as well as reversed. I've never come across anything like this. I got the inspiration from tape-splicing. It would be possible to implement it in the digital domain, but whenever I suggest the idea to collegues or programmers I don;t get taken seriously. Fear of the unknown huh? Philistines! | |

How do you rotate a sample sideways?
????? this doesn't make sense. at all. sideways... geez.. audio is one dimensional (at least mono is) and stereo is just two "one dimensioal objects.." if you were to splice tape sideways you should just get a DC offset, equal to the amplitude in the middle of the splice. (if the heads were perfectly aligned.) Spas | |

Yeah Data, but using the granular synthesis in AudioMulch you can set upper and lower limits for all the parameters and quantise the timing of the granules giving you a more controlled and predictable result. | |

Other than the absurd suggestion about rotation/.//this is quite easy to acheive in Reaktor.
and the idea is basically a granular synthesis one.. but less developed than granualr synthesis itself/. One way to interpret the Rotation. take a plane with the waveform in 3D - rotate the plane a little (les than 90 degrees) now project that back onto the original plane.. guess what. it takes up Less space. is shorter run through the samples ... wow the pitch is now higher.. all it does is pitch shift. so... you want to have random controll of the pitch ? this is usually known as pitch jitter and is common in granular synthesis. yeah, the thing about turning the audio stream sideways is what made me laugh.
but hey crusher-x has a really nice interface huh? i think so, i first downloaded it a couple years ago.. confusing at first but very good for weird washes, as granular processing generally is. try it! [ 10 October 2001: Message edited by: exponent ] |
