double-click on an audio track in the arrange
scroll over in the mixer until you see a fader named 'AudioInst1'
on the top insert slot of that channel, press and hold the slot.
a list of your VSTi comes up
choose the one you really like
now right-click on the fader
play your keyboard

to view the instrument, double-click on its name in the fader

I think I've done everything you said, but that only allows me access to effects. I'm looking to play VSTis. If you could explain it in slightly simpler terms, I'd be most grateful.

Make sure you select one of the "AudioInst" channels and not the regular "Audio" ones! Also use the >topmost< of the empty fields, the two below are for the effect inserts. If it still does not work, read the manual again very carefully...
