Hi!
Awave Studio can convert to/from GIG, it's shareware, info available here: http://www.fmjsoft.com/ ChickenSys Translator does NOT offer it, see their "justification" here: http://www.chickensys.com/translator/soundfont/giga.html Other than that, I currently know no other prog that can convert GIG files, sorry! About "Translator" argument:
What an incredible thing to read!!!!!! I could give it an award as the most classist and liar justification I've ever read. So...we...poor users of (thankfully cheap!) software that loads soundfonts, won't ever get access to the sounds used by the "Pro's" because of the enourmous efforts Nemesys's done to craft them? I think that copyrights of software are ok, an the intellectual property is the right of their creators, I can understand even the copyright of a drum loop or something like it (a piece of art created by some musician at least), but... I don't think you could "own" say.. a piano sound. I know that it must have been a painfull job to record and edit the samples, a lot of time and money spent on it, and Nemesys is in it's right if they're not interested in converting them to another format. But then...please Chicken Systems...don't say such things as "these new platforms need to work for their own support and samples under their belt, as well as getting them to work to maturity" Do you really believe what you say???? Soundfont's a new platform???? Do you believe that it hasn't reached enough maturity status yet???? Hey, we are speaking about a sample format that has been with us since I have memory...much much longer than Giga...and mostly important...has served to boost the amateur (in the best sense "amateur"="lover") music scene like no other format has done. What is the problem with it? Is it that an enourmous part of them are freeware?...you hate the word...don't you? Well...in an opposite sense, I hate solutions that are created for a few chosen lucky "Pro's" Aside from Awave...Steinberg's (and they're probably not a charity institution) too offers now the conversion from Giga to Halion, so if you're an owner of Halion and willing to take the trouble, you could extract the individual wav files from the conversion directory, build a soundfont, and forget about Chicken Systems forever!!!! The next version of AWAVE (v7.4) will support VSampler. So you get a one-step way to do a GIG to VSB conversion. I don't know when Markus will release AWAVE 7.4, but the VSampler VSB export already works in a beta he sent us.

Not to argue in Nemesys' or Chicken Systems' defense, but sound recordings are definitely an owned, copyrighted, & protected form of art. Many of the presets you find in the larger-name hardware synths are copyrighted, this isn't to protect Roland from you or I using their sounds in our tracks but to stop other synth or sample cd makers from sampling Roland products for their own profit.
Furthermore, the sound recording (SR) copyright form is a godsend to musicians as it is the easiest way for us to protect our own music. With this type of copyright, we simply need to mail a recording of our work to the library of congress & it is automatically protected, no need for the printed music scores or lyric charts that were required in the past (even though I can write scores, I'd never want to do anything as mind-numbing as scoring one of my acid techno tracks).

Well...
Yes, Uncle E, you're right in every word you wrote. I will need to cool down... Is just that after reading Toby's post and checked for myself, I got a "little" biased against Chicken Systems parrot's attitude. I got so upset that I even forgot what the original thread was about. The copyright system you've described sound fabulous! Here where I live they still require printed scores. Take care Rere

Slight Off-Topic, but in any case. HALion v1.1 reads GigaSamples. I have no clue how well.

That was the biggest pile of shit.
I don't really care whether Chickenshit Systems offer this translation or not, but how can they justify not doing it BUT doing the others. It's translation software - it's what it's made for. Hey Uncle E. I liked what you said about copyright, although the argument is completely irrelevant in this case. As soon as you have this translation software you can argue that you are threatening the painstaking .sf2 recordings that have been made professionally on what is a far more mature and supported platform than .gig. What about the commercial akai samples? The kurzweil samples? Is there anything particularly special about the Giga recordings that they should have their copyright preserved over other sample formats? The statement Chickpea makes is downright offensive to any company that commercially produces samples in a format other than Giga. And let's not forget the most important fact. It will translate from other formats into .gig format!!!!!!!!!!! Gee, let's see. If you happen to own Giga software and Chicklicks Translator, you have the ultimate tool. How convenient! Not affiliated with Nemesys? PIG'S ARSE!!!! Just thought I'd share. As I said I don't actually care what features they offer. I'm not interested in buying this crap anyway, but I just can't stand reading blatant lies. BUY AWAVE, BUY AWAVE, BUY AWAVE, BUY AWAVE. Now where's a government to overthrow...? Caleb.
