a while back, i believe it was Pro-52, i used my regular PC keyboard to play the softsynth by hitting the "H" key, "J" key etc. etc. and i then recorded a wav file.

are there any other VSTi's like Pro-52 that can do that? id like to make stuff up on my laptop just using my keyboard.

thanx y'all!

All the NI stuff do this, but in stand alone mode only. I think Vaz did it too, but don't quote me on that, as I never had much time to play around with it. I totally think that more plugs should do this stock, but there is hope, if I'm not mistaken Tobybears Quick Keys allows you to do this.

SONAR comes with an app called "Virtual Piano" that does this.

SynC Modular has this feature. You can enable/disable PC Keyboard playing at any time...I'm sure about the stand-alone version, not sure if it is the same with the VSTi...
I'm not at home right now...Download the demo and check it out for yourself

Cubase will do it, at least my Mac version does, if you press down keylock then some of the letter keys can be used to trigger notes, the manual has the details.

There's also an app available from Propellerheads called Querty input that will allow you do access OMS and play from the keyboard, I'm pretty sure there's a PC version as well.

Cheers

Tadaah! Tobybear entering this thread!

No, I won't tell you how genius my Quickeys is Smile because I think the keyboard input could be handled better in Quickeys: clicking with the mouse works quite fine, but I am still looking for a good way to handle key pressed/up messages properly. It is really quirky in Microsoft Windows, but maybe I have a cool idea someday. Also don't forget that some hosts do not or only partially allow plugins to capture keystrokes (Orion)!

Anyway, everyone's free to try it out and send me comments, as always :-)

Cheers

Toby

Besides the program mentioned by girl_with_beard (now that's a nice name
) there are also some free and small stand-alone apps out there which could do the job.

The one I liked the most and as far as I know the only one to handle non-English keyboards can be found at http://www.analogx.com
