AuthorTopic: CM-101 Vs Electron

Hey guys, how close is the CM-101 to Electron? I know Electron has a bunch more features and whatnot, but is the architecture behind these two basically the same? Are the using the same VCO's/VCF's? I'm just curious cause I'm really digging the CM-101, it's simple to program and just sounds prefect for what I do (if a hardware version was made I'd buy it in a second) and I was just wondering if Electron is the 101's older brother so to speak. If so I might just have to pick Electron up. Am I silly for liking the 101? It's probably my favorite synth at the moment.

It's free! Well, the cost of a magazine.....u can't grumble at that! I think it's quite a decent little synth too

Nice and simple tio use thats what we like.

However Electron is one of my favorite synths - has been for a long time and is a good step up from CM-101.

CM101 has identical oscillators, filters, envelopes and LFO's to Electron. Some things are slightly rearranged, though.

The most significant difference is that CM101 has a 24db filter - this is actually achieved internally by stacking two 12db filters. In Electron you can put the identical dual 12db filters in link mode and get a similar effect, but since the cutoff/resonance ranges are different it won't quite sound the same. CM101's filter is our new design in part taken from Tau Pro, and has a fruitier sound I reckon than Electron.

Also, the waveshapes for each oscillator are selectable in CM101 - in Electron they are fixed, like a Juno.

Hope this helps

If you have a credit card, go to http://www.computermusic.co.uk/main.asp and try to order either issue 36, 37, 38 or 39.

The current issue 40 doesn't have it any longer, but the SR-202 instead.
