AuthorTopic: Acoustic modelling of electric pianos ?

hi

After trying both the new Big Tick epiano and J Knockers Virtual ep (for Reaktor) I'm coming to the conclusion that the simple sample-based ones are better.....mda's, Sonic Implants soundfont.

These modelled versions just don't sound as warm and realistic as a multi velocity-layered sampled instrument. They sort more FMish and artificial.

I haven't tried the Logic's evp however.

Um, the Big Tick one IS using FM, it's supposed to sound like that.
Don't think of it as an exact emulation of a real electric piano as much as taking the "classic" sounds of the FM electric piano patches from the 80's and taking them a couple of steps further. And since I'm a FM synth fanatic, I'm having a blast with it!

hmmm...so I can use them to emulate Simply Red circa 1984 ?

I'm not sure if there's a demo logic EVP73 (I bought it without a demo, and that's what I'd call a model) but let your ears make the decision, not the label/description.

...mere advertising words like "Modeling" don't necessarily mean anything anymore. It's a pity the term got diluted so quickly.

In my opinion there's only one company doing any significant kick butt "modeling" right now and that's Native Instruments.

Not true, there's Applied Acoustics Systems who only do physical modeling. And actually, there are some nice electric pianos (including an FM one) included in The Tassman. And if you don't like it, you can build your own

how can an opinion be "not true"
"kick butt" to me is great sound + low CPU + great GUI. Tassman doesn't have the low cpu and I wouldn't call the GUI great either. Right now only NI has the vision and skill for what I want out of soft synthesis, hopefully more contenders will emerge over time.

I've tried the ep-station and I find the presets quite nice, I hope it will not cost too much...

my bad, replace "not true" with "I disagree"
Hopefully Infinity will catch on and all the other modular guys will start copying their GUI ideas.

I've had an opportunity to play with the EVP73 and I gotta say it's the best rhodes emulator out now, too bad they won't release the full version for the VST format. At least one Wuli and one Rhodes woulda been acceptable, but just one model is a rip. It is nice but it does sound a bit clean, which isn't necessaraly bad it just takes some mucking up to get the classic tone, on the other hand MDA's ePiano is pre mucked up, and sounds great right from the go. Plus the EVP sounds like garbage with the sustain pedal on. My friend who bought EVP actually played MDA ePiano at my place one day and felt it sounded more real right from the go, but you can only get so much from samples. Anyway I'm all for NI releasing an Electric Piano set. Or maybe a full out keyboard set, that would include a clavia, a harpsichord, Wurli, Rhodes, RMI, etc. That would be worth $200 easy, and it would be the first (and probably the only) $200 I'd spend on a single plug-in set. I can't wait for NI (or someone) to get around to doing some nice EPs in a VST format. Hell screw everything else I need a Wuli (I really love those F-ing things) and quick.

FYI
I'm releasing next week an EP designed on Infinity platform, as you know the Infinity player is FREE (standalone but not VST)
and my EP will cost less than 20$ by dashsyntehsis.com,

It will feature distortion, EQ, wha, phaser and reverb .

there will be demo mp3s and I hope you will check them.

bye

Yeah I'm just hoping that Emagic sees a business opportunity and updates the EVP73 with a Wurli. Other than that it could be a *long* wait. In the meantime there's the Wizoo Magnetica samples but you don't get the integrated tremelo, chorus velocity scaling, which really make for the best experience.
