AuthorTopic: another annoying sampler question
morphlab

First let me shell:

i've tried every sampler i can find for VST daw's

my problem persists:

vsampler does cool things, if you like flipping through pages of menus and panels.

Halion is TREMENDOUS and takes up the whole screen.(arranged across 5 pages...each page is as tall as my 21" monitor) sorry-- see: ERGONOMICS and 'fetish for those few extra windows'). unbelievable they made the thing so effing big----u can easily cut off 6" off the top, leaving you with something more usable. i only talk hard about Steinberg as a company, not as a family and i use Cubase during every waking hour of my life.
ANYWAY-

NI Battery has no filters, but is to-date a best choice. (see: ERGONOMICS )

exs24 has one output (until next year or whenever)

my soundcard costs too much to know what soundfonts are, and i probably wouldn't use them anyway

i love reaktor for aliensex noises

I'm looking for a nice, ergonomically designed, VST sampler, with multiple outputs, velocity layers, loop editing, cut/res filter, maybe some drag-n-drop.

p.s. PLEASE PLEASE SHRINK THE HALION--it's the best softsampler there is, did you even notice how big you made it?

if you've read this far, ya might as well talk to me

samp choice?

-mike

Try the DR-008 from FxPansion...

DR-008=Battery + (has filters, extendable, synths, etc...)

No problemo... I was hoping someone would chime in on the other good one... Can't remember the name... But its made by the same company that makes CronoX...

I've been going through the same thing. Haven't tried Halion yet though since I hear so many shady things about it, and I can't help but wonder how often updates will happen.

I use Battery for all my drums and it's brilliant. Great UI, very fast to use, very stable. Simple and to the point, but powerful. But it won't do to replace my Akai s3000xl for synths/strings/pianos/whatever. No crossfades on loops, no filters, and the UI really isn't well-suited to "instrument" type sounds.

I've tried Virtual Sampler twice. Both times I spent a half hour staring at it and never got it to make sounds. I know some people love this plug but obviously it don't work the way my brain works (and I'm not new to samplers by a long shot).

The one I really dig thus far is SamplerChan. The UI is very. very. very. usable. Really great work there. Unfortunately I've had some stability problems and my emails to the author have gone as of yet unanswered. Still, this seems like a great plug with a lot of potential; finally there's a developer who "gets" samplers.

Seems like NI should be working on a Halion/EXS killer to me too... hm.

(BTW, I don't mind big GUIs for things that need 'em... like samplers. That's why I run 2 monitors at 1600x1280!)

I don't know how relevant this is, but this weekend I loaded up three DR-008s across 3 midi channels in VST5, and then loaded almost every pad with a wav loop, all acquired from Prime Sounds as bulk downloads.

This is a lotta lotta samples to have online simultaneously, 3 DR-008's worth.

Choke groups were applied within different sample group areas to keep the sounds neat and tidy.

It worked great and I had a ball.

Does this say something for DR-008?

btw HALion is on my Xmas list. I want something that'll last 10 years, and still be upgradable.

Can you guys detect a difference in CPU usage between Battery and the DR-008 ? People have told me that Battery is a known CPU hog, but if anyone has used both a fair amount perhaps they could tell me if this is true. Thank you.

Just thought I'd bump this up to see if anyone else has thoughts on the subject.

Anyone had any contact with the SamplerChan author? Is he on KvR? I sent a few emails but never heard back from him; I'd expect that from Steinberg but hopefully not from individual developers...

Hey Doug
Well funny you should mention ...It'll be out any day now ... But it is only a simple Sampler .. No Halion or Vsampler here. Just a Simple tool for Audio Fools .. It'll be announced on KVR any time so stay tuned. And Thanks for remembering.

tralalalalala......just wanted to praise my EXS24 a bit, ´cause I am totally happy with it, jahaa.
And when it will have multiple outs and a slightly better sample-handling it will be near perfection, for my taste.

In general I think that the invention of software-samplers is one of the best things that ever, ever came along.

Ah, the EXS24... I hear great things about it and I'd love to use it, but I use VST, not Logic, and from what I hear the non-Logic version is pretty brain-dead compared to the Logic one. Why does Emagic have to go and do that?!?

And I guess I owe it to myself to have a look at Halion after all. (I'm really rooting for SamplerChan though!)

For non pitched instruments, I'm starting to love the SR-202. I wouldn't mind an easy little pitched sampler with such fun functions

Peace
