AuthorTopic: A real Voice Machine

Who's going to invent a real Voice Machine ... you know ... play some keys and a choir sound comes out.

Maybe solo voices, oohs, aaahs, doos.

I'd really love this. Instant choirs and voices. Wow.

Is there some voice algorithm around to start off the idea?

I would definitely pay for something like this.

It could be one in a line of wonderful specialist synths like Ticky Clav, daOrgan, Plucked String, Cheese Machine, ZR-1 etc.

I would love to real time play a Vowel Knob ...aaaeeeeiii ...ohhhh ...yuuuuuu - ooh!

Crazy. Gimme one [Smile] [Smile] [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Hey Kevvvvvvvvvvvv,

You've reminded me of an idea that haunts me from time to time!!!

My idea is this:

Record my voice into SoundForge - making a selection of sounds

1) Sustained vowels - eeee oooo iiiii aaaaa, etc.
2) One shots - da ba dee dum, etc.

Then tweek them (normalize the RMS, etc. cropping & stuff)

Next stage load them into Halion or Battery and then feed the output into voice machine as an insert!

This would be such a fun thing to do!

Seeing as VoiceMachine requires midi data and vocal signals you could either put the chords in first and then play the one shots on a MIDI keyboard OR sequence the sampled self first and play the chords on the MIDI keyboard!

A great idea, even if I do say so myself! (Licks his finger, touches his own face and makes a sizzle sound! - lol)

PS: I'm gonna do this right now.

Extra PS: No Halion/Battery/VoiceMachine then use MDA Vocoder and Helios or similar!

actually I made something like that for SynC Modular last year, the patch is named "Talk shooter" and can morph from a vowel to another,
I used in a song simply called "Sync Blues"
made with SM sounds only, I used there "Talk shooter" for a Tibetan monk like voice.

My patch it's not very suitable for extended melody since the vocal spectrum is limited in a narrow range of notes, anyway quite realistic for some kind of voice.

Josep M Comajuncosas(http://www.csounds.com/jmc/) made a cool patch for SM emulating Tuva singer style.

I know that a similar ens is at the User area for
Reaktor.

OT:
I'd be glad to collaborate with with a coder to built a VST generator, but usually they "the coders" don't like this kind of collaboration (who knows? <grin>) e.g. I made a lot of Clavinet and similar PM synths for SM more than one year ago, I offered my knowledge to many C++ coders,
but... could be a merit issue?
Sorry for this OT, just let the keyboard going.

Well a Voicemachine exists as hardware in the form of the Yamaha FS1R. It would be cool if someone would write a softsynth which was based around formant oscillators and filters, especially if you could morph between different vowels. One of the main problems is that most of the formant stuff I've heard lacks that pro-sound edge.

I really hope you can get this thing accomplished. I am in NEEED of some nice Carmina Burana (probably misspelled) choir sounds.

Tick,

Sounds like a godsend.

Questions popping up:

Dusted wants fast attacks. Can it be done?

What sort of price would you like to charge?

How long might it take to complete?

Questions, questions, questions ... sheesh [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Kev,

Fast attacks... why not.. although choir-pad stuff usually has slow attacks.

Price would be similar to the ep-station, in the 35$ range.

How long... damn... I don't wanna rush it... I've got to make sure the formants are tuned right... and you'll want some onboard effects, of course... I'd say, a few more weeks before betatesting...

Big Tick,
I'm really glad that you have taken on this chore. I'm interested in making plugs and I wanted to make something like this, but I'm just learning how to program so I estimate at least a year to get something down the way I want it. Who knows mayby longer, maybe not.

I don't want the same old choir. What I think is needed is some realistic, scary music, intense quick staccato choirs. Of course I think that nice pads are excelellent too. But quick choir 'stabs' are what is missing from all the choir pathces that I find. One more thing is this going to be physical modeled or sampled or a combination of both.

PS
If this thing will fill the gap in my set up I will quickly buy two of them and give one away to a lucky individual.

thanks

Tick, I'll pay for a beta and help you test it if you want. No problem.

As soon as you set something up with Shareit I'll pop along and buy it [Smile]

Can I mention that me and Dusted have been having a conversation about choirs, voices and scarey voices for some time. It's great that now someone's going to do something about it [Smile]

BT,
This is a great idea ... and i'm really excited about it. Sign me up for beta too, if you need.

Are you familiar with a vst effect for choirs? CLoneEnsemble?? Just thought that might help for fx or idears or just to know what else is out there. It might be cool for the user to be able to choose his/her choir size. Just a thought.

No suggestions from me. How could I possibly compete with Vowelator and Aaahsynth. Magnificent!

But I do just want to put my negligible weight behind this project.

I've already made my mind up to only purhase VSTis very rarely from here on in because I've got such a great collection. However, this one would probably be on par with Nexus as a 'must have' and at a bargain price.

It will go fantastically with Cheeze Machine which I think is one amazing piece of freeware.

Thanks Big Tick.

Check out the MTron's site: they have demo MP3's of the main MTron bank, as well as two new tape banks: the Tape Bank Vol.1 has a lot of voice/choir effects, but the original MTron has the "vintage" Mellotron choirs.
Yikes...I just saw that the new bank coming out has a lot of vintage Genesis choir sounds (like in "Entangled")...oooh, I may have to grab that too! [Big Grin]

I still got to tweak the model a bit... But it's getting there... and, it's based on the same core than my other vsti's, so (mac weirdnesses aside - see the current problems with TickyClav and EP-station) it should in theory port to the Mac....

Oh, that's pretty cool (the test.mp3), sounds sort of like the Ahh patch on my Kawai K1, but nicer. But I was hoping you were gonna do like VocalWriter but for the PC, that's about the craziest sequencer/synth ever, 85 voices, 79 or so based on GM patches; Cello, Clarinet, Timbale, etc. And a bunch more phonemes than available in regular Macintalk. I prefer the [[pbas 60;inpt PHON]]~dOW [[pbas 62]]~rEY [[pbas 64]]~mIY [[pbas 65]]~fAA [[inpt TEXT]] style. But the Aahsynth, on the other hand, could actually be useful, rather than just irritating.
