I'd like to know if a type of synth dedicated on Acoustic modeling with free oscillation
" Modélisation acoustique a oscillation libre" like originally the Yamaha VP 1 synth is supposed to do would have a chance to be released as software ? ![]()

So the VP1 is the never released polyphonic version of the VL1 which is the original phys mod synth that is supposedly a level of quality above the more recent VL-70M.
I guess most phys. models are 'fixed' in the sense that you can't get at all the lower level parameters . You can do this with the VL1 which is probably the most sophisticated but the editing process is supposed to be quite unintuitive. Korg Oasys may be the closest thing. It has a great selection of detailed phys. models and lets you load in new synthesis algorithms that run on its own DSP (is not too expensive, crazy modulation possibilities, sounds amazing). VSTis seem to be just now emerging on the scene in more simplified forms so I think we'll have to wait for those. Unless Yamaha exlusively owns the rights to that technology or is the only one willing to develop the low level editor, I imagine (hope) someone would want to take on that project. What do you mean by free oscillation? Anyone here have a VL1 ?

As to why there is no Yamaha VL vstInstrument, I have no idea. Yamaha has a high latency standalone softsynth that shows that it can, and has been ported to PC. www.yamaha-xg.com. DirectX drivers only, no ASIO support. I had hoped that Tassman would be the substitute but it does not deliver in that area at all.

about free oscillations...
I may define, but it should be confirmed, two types of acoustic modeling First of all : acoustic modelling on sustained oscillation... (...by lungs's musician or a bow, i suppose !) And "free oscillation" may be adapted (still expecting ) to define models of tuned percussion, pianos and other acoustic keyboard, plucked instruments in general (something like: an initial impulse that generates oscillation, that themselves decreases by dissipating initial energy)¨ We should ask a physician ! As much as i know, the VP 1 except, all hardware modules are of the first category, designed to modelise wind and bowed monophonic instruments (like dmi flute !) I've got a VL-70m, i know that the "haut de gamme" , the VL 1 is duophonic but i think it really work as monophonic bi-timbral module |
