Hi,

I'm looking for a realistic sounding VST instrument for Cubase that's a Bass Guitar. I tried their Vb-1, and I can't seem to get it sounding that realistic. It's pretty good, I must say, but is there anything better out there? Doesn't have to neccessarily be free (would be nice). Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe check out the new Slayer VSTi from reFX.
You can hear a good example of some of the bass-guitar sounds available from it on the demo tune I did for them on the site, called "ProgSlayer".

If you're more interested in working with sampled basses, perhaps check out Sonic Synth or the Spectrasonics Trilogy.

If you're looking for good synth-bass sounds, I would recommend the free Triangle II VSTi from rgcAudio, or Junglist from Sonic Syndicate.

hmm. You could try to back up the VB-1 with a soundfont maybe.
I sometimes back up my more "realistic" instruments with the DX-10. There are a few presets for different instrument sounds and as electronic as they may sound, sometimes it does the trick after some fine tuning with effects.

Lots of help I've been on this one... lol

Jai,

You might want to check previous posts on this topic, maybe from last week. I think everyone agreed that the worlds first vst was no good at making good bass sounds, and if you run it through some distortion or other effects you can get a better sound. Some people make their bass sounds using multisamples of different bass instruments. [Smile]

I tried Slayer yesterday and bought it at once, the bass sounds are very very good (considering Im not a bassist)

You can make funk style bass lines easily, with good results.

VB1 can do realistic basses if you move the pickup away from the pick.... you can try to put in a dynamic filter like d-pole or north pole to be less brilliant when played softer.
but the most important thing is how you program/play the part... if you make a realistic bass part you can assign to anything from neon to fm7 and it will sound right.
A super sampled real bass in a poor part sounds worse than a synt one.
