I have moved to an all computer (VST) based studio. (I would like to let my jv-2080 take a vaction). But I need sounds. I know about sites like hammersound, but who has time to download 100 soundfonts. What specific soundfonts do you think are great or use a lot, If you can include the site you got it from, great. This is not a SITE PROMOTION thread. Speciific soundfonts, I would like to build an arsenal that would make me NOT miss that 2080. Also, and VSTi with lots of good preset sounds. I need to make tracks, not chase sounds. Drums are cool also. Types of music I do (house, pop, r&b, hip-hop)

quote:Here are the solutions I found that worked well for me: The Sound Site Go to the following address and order their entire online library on 8 cd's for $49. (You will need to buy a soundfont player of some sort, but I'm sure you know that already. ) You won't have to worry about downloading all of the files. You can then pick and choose what you like or don't like. Put the ones you like on your hard drive, and ignore the rest. You can even group the soundfonts into specific groups (Leads, Pads, Brass, Strings, etc.) to help you work faster in the future.
After everything is added and separated as you like it, back up everything to CDR. Any time you need to reload them, they will be there and available for you. Voila, instant custom sound module.
Although some of the sounds in the library are crap, I found more than enough to make me feel that I got an excellent value for my money. Remember, these are all soundfonts that people have created and donated to the world. You are bound to find SOME that are crap. Overall, I would recommend you consider this option. Lot's of bang for the buck.
THEN, I also went and bought Sonic Reality's Sonic synth VSTi software. (I use Livesynth Pro DXi for my soundfonts). I have yet to find a company that has such good support as Sonic Reality has for Sonic Synth. Also, between now and Aug 31st, there is a special going on. I bought my Sonic Synth from Guitar center for $189. With that purchase, came 3 full CD's of Professional quality content. ALSO, I get 2 more CD's of new content because I purchased before Aug. 31st. ALSO, later this fall, there is going to be a Sonic Synth upgrade, for $50 and an additional CD of Professional quality content will be included. So, let's sum this up: * 8 CDs of mixed quality soundfonts * Sonic Reality's Sonic Synth (a potential of 6 CDs of professional quality content. --counting the required future upgrade cost this fall). I think you will be set for a LONG, LONG, time.
I hope this helps you. --Sean

quote:In addition, there are LOTS of synths that come with lots of patches. Pentagon I for $99 comes with around 300 Professional quality patches (very usable). There are a lot of other synths out there that have a lot of patches, but I'm only going to name things that I know and use. A couple of freebies you might want to try out: Green Oak's Crystal RGC's Triangle II You can find all of these and many others in the instruments section of this site. Hope this helps, --Sean

Yeah I agree the soundsite cd is packeed with sounds. It's a gem. I've used at least one or two
sounds from it in every song. I've found patches that rival even the top synths but there are many patches so it takes time to go through them all. Also emu has some nice fonts on their site you can check out. I have dedicated one of my older computers with a sblive card just for soundfonts. Talk about a mega module! If there were no vsti's I would still be happy using soundfonts. Mush

Thanks for both of your replies, I use vsampler to play my soundfonts. I was trying to avoid having to browse thru 100's of soundfonts. But I guess there is no way around it.

Some favourite sf2s- the StudioAx Grand Piano One (demos of which are panned on Hammersound) is incredibly clear and expressive to my ears and fingers the programming is so superior to eg the piano on Peter Siedlaczek's Total Piano which is about 10 times bigger ( 200 Mb)- the MiniMoog and Oberheim free sfs on Hammersound- Sonic Implants espec their drums and scat vocals- and don't forget you can download the basic soundset of many Emu modules eg Vintage Keys, Mo Phatt in soundfont format quite cheaply. |
