| Author | Topic: Any battery users? Free Kit of Rock Samples... |
| KurganQ2 | Posted: 9th July 2002 02:16 |
Hi I took some samples i recorded from a friend's drum set a while back as my first test with Battery and created a drum kit. The samples are pretty good, but i'm going to go back and redo some and try to get a hold of more of his playing samples instead of just the single hits (for snare/hat etc..) It's a pearl drum set, a good one, but not the best...tom's weren't in the greatest shape.
Let me know what you think...feel free to use at will, the only thing i ask is if you come up with better layers and kits please send me back the .kit file!! There is a more processed/compressed kick and snare (3 or 4 layers each) in the directory too if you like that better. This is set up on a General Midi patch/mapping for now. Here it is in action: http://www.chrismilne.com/temp/jc_drum_loop_L2.mp3 UPDATE here's another version with a little more variety (i was just hand editing the hits you it's not that great playing wise, but it has some double bass and ride): http://www.chrismilne.com/temp/jc_drum_loop2.mp3 Here's a link to the samples/kit files: http://www.chrismilne.com/battery/CMILNEBatteryKit3.zip Also any comments will be helpful for my next try. Hi KurganQ2!
Thanks for taking the time to put this together, and to let us cop the use of it for nothing! I'm downloading it in a bit, although I might not get a chance to put it through it's paces for a couple of days, but I'll get back to you! Cheers! H ![]()

no problem...hope it's useful for someone else too

KurganQ2,
the kit sounds good, thanks for offering it to us Battery users. It will be a bit before I'll be able to put it through it's paces. Bruce

hey thanks,
cool of you to put it up, nice sounding pearl kit. what model is it, BRX? I look forward to seeing how you develop it after you have re done the sampling smilies all round.

i don't recall what type of pearl it is...but i know the mic's i used cost more than the kit (added up)
But it sounds pretty good...the big problem i have with it is the tom's weren't in the greatest tune (the middle ones to be exact..high and floor were good). I need a lot more types of hi hat and cymbal catches etc... The snare is really nice (DW snare) which i think could have been captured better, though that will have to wait until next time i get a chance to record it. The tom's are a bit noisy after the compression and EQ..so I have to figure out how to clean them up and get a better loop (they sort of cut off, i guess i should have been listening a litle louder with headphones). any other things i should be thinking about? i could also do a more wet kit...normally i add the FX in Cubase, but if people think that's tedious i could do one where the samples already have some natural room type verb on them...i might find that useful myself for doing some quick stuff.
One thing i noticed that was wierd was one of the kick's seems bone dry and the other (left) had a little verb on it...when i get back home tomorrow i will check what brought that on...or if it actually had to do with where the mic was.

Thanks so much for the kit. I just loaded it into Sonar 2 with a country rock tune of mine. It sounds great. I like the snare and the hi hats. The kit, coupled with Sonic Synth fretless bass, classic rhodes piano,l buckingham guitar on one side and 12-string acoustic on the other make for a very sweet sounding song.
I look forward to anymore programming and sample upgrades but it works for me right now. This kit plus the Ambient kit on KVR are better than most of the Battery kits that came with the program, at least for my type of music. However, NI's Studio Drums package is awesome. This is a great time to be writing and recording music. FG

yeah, i did this because i thought the rock kit that came with Battery was horrible...haven't heard the version you are talking about...
thanks | |

hey if you get an mp3 of your song let me know..i'd like to hear how it sounds in your mix!
thanks, chris | |

quote:I think it would be safest to leave it dry. Once the reverb is added to it, then you're commited to try and fit the track around that kind of sound. If you are planning on spending time recording more kit samples, then it may be an idea to try and have a chat with Manytone - Paul - he's one of the mod's on the board. He's put together some top kits for the RMIII and Battery, and I dare say will have some useful tips, although you might have to butter him up first 'cos he may be worrying about the competition!

chris@chrismilne.com is fine...
i look forward to any tips from the mods...i'll have to look around...do they have patches and kits listed on this site?
| KurganQ2 | Posted: 10th July 2002 02:03 |
i found an ambient kit under the settings...i have to go back and look at mine, his kit is so much louder overall than mine. I wasn't normalizingsamples, maybe that's why (though i'm not usually a fan of normalizing).
i could do an ambient kit as well since i was using overheads and room mic's when i mic'ed that set...though i don't remember if i was using stereo room mic's. [ 10 July 2002, 05:05: Message edited by: KurganQ2 ]

Nice work on the drumkit. Its really useful. I wouldnt normalize the samples as this will take away the natural dynamics and make them sound artificial. You want your high hats and ride cymbals to not be as loud as your kick drum and snares. Normalizing also brings up the noise floor.

Here's a new version of the kit with less samples and retuned toms. It is also evened out (levels).
This was sent to me by Mario Leonelli who did an excellent job. Here you go: http://www.chrismilne.com/battery/CMILNEkit_re_edited.zip

There is a very simple way to get tons of drum kits for Your Battery.
You can visit http://www.thesoundsite.net, download some soundfonts for free, and then import it from Battery (NI Battery can read *.sf2 files) That's all !!!
| fake d.j. | Posted: 26th July 2002 10:43 |
The link is wrong.
Take out the, Ta! | |

| fake d.j. | Posted: 26th July 2002 11:16 |
No probs,thanks for posting it.
All I need now is a soundfont>wav converter? Anybody... Ta
| Jackart | Posted: 26th July 2002 11:27 |
quote:Wake up man! It's 3 and half p.m. I told You (see above) that Battery can read *.sf2 file, so You don't need any converters or other progz. JUST BATTERY AND SOUNDFONTS.
| fake d.j. | Posted: 26th July 2002 11:34 |
I know,
I read it thats how I spotted your spelling mistake! hence "Take out the," Its just that I dont use Battery! But maybe soon

quote:MHMMM... SO You need Awave Studio or Viena Soundfont Studio (freeware from Creative) or Soundfaction Alive Converter or Virtual Sampler.
| fake d.j. | Posted: 26th July 2002 11:51 |
Gonna get on it straight away.
As you can tell, I don't know much about soundfonts.
You have helped me a lot. Thanks.

quote:...so I have Your mp3, and what can I say? The only thing is: Good Work KurganQ2! Now I'm downloading the kit... ...one moment... I have it. ...really nice work... ...but... ...can You add another one or 2 if You please (highest) layer(s) of snare (with rimshot)?
| KurganQ2 | Posted: 5th August 2002 18:41 |
should be a rimshot on there already...you may want to modify it a bit so it happens a little sooner (i think i have it only on the hardest hit or something)
probably not the best rimshot... i'm going to have drums at my place soon (for a little while) i hope to get some more samples soon.
| Jackart | Posted: 6th August 2002 07:19 |
quote:Don't be sorry. It's veryveryveryveryvery good work. I found samples called rimshot in Your set and snare with rimshot as an instrument, and I know what to do to modify drumkit in Battery, but... ( you're developer).
My proposition is: When You hit hard on snare key ( E1) You can hear snare with very sharp rimshot.(so when You play soft You can hear only snare) This way You can play snare accents with one key only (like a real drummer). Your set sounds really good. I like it. |
