Hey everyone, I've got a new synth I just made called Aura 1.0
It's a 2 oscilator phase distortion / subtractive hybrid synth.

Check it out for free at:
http://www.incadence.net/imo/synth/aura.zip

It's my first release, so let me know what you think Very Happy

Hi Tufif,

It's interesting. Some of the presets (Space Pad, Whistled Lead, Chiffy) are right on the spot, which guarantees I'll be using it at least a couple of times. In addition, it seems the MIDI CC is very nicely implemented, because it reads beautifully in Orion Platinum, and even some of the great VSTi's don't do that properly (for various reasons).

On the other hand, there are a shitload of stuff that needs some serious tweeking:

a) GUI: it's awfully small, and while the fluorescent green on black is easy to read, it gets hard on the eyes quickly. Why would you waste space on a thick frame when everything else is so crowded?

b) By the same token, you should organize each unit (Oscillators, Delay, etc.) into its own section, and separate them with a simple frame. I thought one of the better interfaces that have come out lately is that of Satyr, by the way.

c) The GUI is also a bit slow to update when one changes the presets - you might want to look into it.

d) There is no scale anywhere, so it's very hard to make fine adjustments.

e) Many of the controls are one-click, sequential type (e.g. Bend Range). This means if I want to change from 1 to 0, it takes 12 (!) clicks, which is WAY too many.

f) You put your web address on the frame, but it's illegible. This defeats the purpose.

g) The presets are mostly of the same kind, and they are pretty harsh.

That's about it. I still love those 3 presets I mentioned above, and will definitely keep an eye on this!

Keep up the good work, and good luck,
tufif

Thanks for your coments Dingo!

I made this in SynthEdit, so I can't take credit for the cc implementing (that would go to Jeff)

A lot of the presets are harsh, 'cuz I'm a rock player and like harsh presets Smile Try turning down the distortion slider on some of them and see if they become more usable for you

The GUI is my first attempt, so I'm still learning. I'll keep in mind your comments when I make my next synth.

wtf?

Its good, but when I hit save in fruity, it went mad and cycled through its presets on its own. Shocked

Tokartta,
I've made a 1.01 update that may fix your problem, plus I've put together a site for it at:
http://www.incadence.net/imo/synth/

Let me know if the problem is still in this version.

Hell, Junglist does that! Smile

I talked to Reflex about that and he said it'll just happen with some plugins. It doesn't hurt anything and they'll "land" on their proper presets.

Thanks Smile
I always have trouble coming up with names for things. Aura has a green interface, and I heard that green auras are good, so I named it Aura. And for Onion, I remember Shrek saying "Onions have layers" Very Happy

nice machine -- not revolutionary, but fat, and efficient with cpu juice.

I agree with dingo's comments, especially about clicking one at a time through many options. dropdowns would be much better than the single button and changing label thing IMO. that'd let you see all your options at once and pick any one quickly. shouldn't take up much if any more space either. are dropdowns an option in SynthEdit?

cool synth though, a keeper.
