Whats wrong with Tau and Tau Pro? They both are very light on CPU and have very nice features, and are automatable.

I love Tau Pro. What an amazing plug, and well worth the (small) cash outlay. However, if that aint for you, you can check out The Claw from ReFx. It sounds good, but I don't know whether it has all the MIDI capabilities. However, you should definately look into Energy or Energy Pro from www.webmassiva.com. The pro version is a paltry $19, and the other one is free. These have all the neccessary goodies required to create a dead-on 303 sound, and a built-in sync'able step-sequencer as well. I use them all the time. All number of MIDI controls can be applied. A blast to play with!

Claw is awesome - and it's free.

I like the TS-404 too. I use that alot, but it's a FruityLoops generator so you need to buy a $99 program for it.

I'd say for you to get and learn Claw and then maybe give the Tau another shot.

ppd tritium sounds good, and is free.

well worth a look

I also liked TBL for 303 stuff , which has been superceded by Claw (not THE Claw, just Claw. Like Madonna.)

Finally, there's always Rebirth, which will always have a special place in my heart.

cheers,

It is, at least in Cubase with standard VSTi automation.

It's automatable in Fruity too.

not by cc#, so it cannot be controlled by external controller and not in hosts like acid.

In Fruityloops it CAN be automated by external controller. So your statement depends on what host you use.

Top left of Fruity wrapper (the little ~ button) > Link to controller.

"tau pro is, but has features beyond 303"

So? Then don't use those features - It's still a 303 emulation with more knobs.

Also check out Rebirth, it has the best 303 sound. Its not a VSTi, but you can record automation and stuff inside rebirth and export your sequences to wave files for you to re-enter them in whichever host you use.

The free-oh-free for Pulsar is very, very nice. (You can use it as a VST via XTC). It's free, but the platform is a little pricey.

But I was playing with a couple 303s this week and they don't even sound like each other (as it turns out this is common with 303's... no two sound alike thanks to a couple cranky pots mounted on the PC that are completely uncalibrated).... which begs the question: who's 303 do you want to emulate?
