Nice try, but it sounds more like a music box than the real thing. Sad

music boxes usually are chromatic percussion instruments so I guess that qualifies them as the "real thing". Try playing with the knobs a bit and I'm sure you will find some usefull sounds. I like turning the tuning right down, the resonance right up and playing notes down the bottom of the keyboard for some nice bass sounds.

I'm not saying these sounds are useless, but I doubt this VSTi can produce realistic vibraphone sounds.

It must be this kind of enthusiastic response that keeps all the freeware developers motivated... Rolling Eyes

So if it's freeware it should get positive response only? Oh, I didn't know that. Can this be read somewhere in the FAQ? Evil or Very Mad

It just seems like a strange reaction to me.

It's a free instrument, and a small download, and a couple of people worked hard on it.

If you're not impressed by it, that's fair enough. Don't use it. Or maybe try to suggest some constructive criticism.

I don't know. I've got these funny ideas about good manners and stuff...my problem, I'm sure...
Lotuz
Posted: 1st September 2002 08:11
Okay, one thing that can be categorised as constructive criticism.

The attack sounds too much like a short noise burst to me. It would be a major improvement if you could make it sound like you're actually hitting the instrument with a soft or hard mallet.
Lotuz
Posted: 1st September 2002 08:22
And on a positive vibe, with a bit of reverb and the Cubase Phaser as insert (Pad Vibe preset) the sustaining presets of the dmiHammer sound a lot nicer. Wink

BTW, the gui looks okay, why don't the knobs change position when you switch from one preset to another? Question

Nice loooking, nice sounding, but if the clicky noise sound at the start of the notes is supposed to be there, then it kind of spoils the sound. Shame, because it sounds otherwise good, and seems quite versatile. Unless it's not supposed to be there and it's a weird Fruity compatibility thing.... Confused
If it is supposed to be there, is there anyway a user could turn it off? Very Happy Otherwise I'll have to filter it out, which would be a shame.

Posted: 1st September 2002 16:14
try turning down the hammer gain knob all the way
choochcat
Posted: 1st September 2002 16:28
nope...still there, which suggests it must be a weird glitch in my setup Very Happy anyone else tried it in fruity?
brittnell
Posted: 1st September 2002 17:18
I've noticed this noise type sound in the attack as well, and have tried quite a few things to silence it.
Even when the gain is completely down, the noise comes back in with any change of the "Mat." knob.

I do see serious potential in this instrument, but have to agree that the hammer section still needs a bit of work.
It's as if it needs a "dull" parameter or something (perhaps a simple LP filter?)...
Mainly, I'd like to be able to get more of a "thunk" out of it, rather than a "tschk", if that makes sense...

Best of luck to you, and thanks again (I really do still like it!).

I would love to hear an mp3 sample of this in use. Any takers?
I won't have a chance to play with it myself for a few days.

Speaking of chromatic percussion instruments:
I've always lusted for that particular Very Happy Martin Denny Very Happy mallet sound.
Samples have always disappointed me in this aspect.
A big part of that sound is the era it was recorded (late 50's-60's).
I hope someday programmers will be able to add that kind of vintage sound as well as a "real" sound option in instruments. That way you could get that "sampled" sound without having to sample old music. I know there are plugins that "dirty" up sound, but it's just like film/tv effects used to make it look like old grain-it just doesn't fool me.......yet.
Is there a sample collection that might appease this? Likewise, I hear the M-Tron has a great vibraphone with that vintage 60's sound.

Back on topic:
The gui looks great. Right up my alley in what I prefer visually.
Thank you for your hard work. There is a market and need for this kind of dedicated instrument - well I know I've been waiting for one!

Posted: 1st September 2002 17:51
Yeah the noise is making this pretty unusable for me (you can lower the volume of it better it never goes away or becomes even a bit unnoticeable), but otherwise it would be a fantastic instrument. If the DMI Guy can get rid of the noise it would probably see a lot of use from me, as I love chromatic sounds. Right now I'm gonna stick to the samples in SS for those sounds, but with some refinement DMI Hammer could become a new favorite of mine.

Finally came around to trying it, but have the same isue: to many noise that's not part of the actual instrument's sound. Besides that it looks promissing.

Yep, there certainly is potential in this instrument, but I tried it for a few minutes and was also bothered by the noise attack. It simply doesn't sound realistic. I was much more impressed by DMI's flute. But I think the main sounds of dmihammer is the good way to go. It's still a uncovered section in vsti's.

Anyway thanks DMI for this generous gifts..

LOL, hey Lotuz thats a cool smiley!

I think the dmi Hammer has got a great potential as it is quite origional. Physical modelled instruments, IMO, are probably the hardest type to get right, so well done DMI for making it so cool on its first release, Cool

Hey all,

I've been experimenting with the hammer section and have found a way of getting rid of the clicking sound. The next release will include a more comprehensive hammer section with a range of excitation functions and perhaps midi cc support. In the mean time I have to hunt down this weird bug when setting certain preset sounds that screws up the GUI, like Lotuz noticed.

Also I've been working on a polyphonic version of dmiFlute. If anyone has any feature requests post them on my site and I'll see about including them.

Ditto on what choochcat said. My system's down right now, I haven't even heard the demo, but I am VERY excited about this instrument and appreciate your effort. I think the GUI looks great. I look forward to playing with this when I get my DAW up again, and especially when you get the glitches out. Thank you so much for your work on this. Great idea!!

Guys, I know I came a bit too negative. Don't think I don't appreciate the hard work of freeware developers. I guess I my expectations were too high since someone finally made the kind of VSTi I had been waiting for for a long time. Who knows how great this VSTi will become? It's still version 1.0...

Re: DMI Hammer

I really like this VSTi. The bottom line is it's free and very musical!
The Stavinsky and Varese presets are superb and sit in my percusion mixes beautifully. There is even a preset called Zappa that work in FZ-type lines. The only downside is that the Marimba has only a narrow range of useable pitches that sound good to my ears. I'm sure this is fixable.

Kudos to dmi for some a great sounding VST.

Enjoy it.

no problemo ... i guess there will me more marimba`s and xylophones etcetera available in the future ... and yeah ... a harp would be cool
buy the way ... nice emoticon

I decided to make a small example on the sound for the people who haven`t used it. ok just a couple of secs
i placed dmi hammer a bit louder in the mix so it can be heard

I love the DMI flute. It has a certain something I have only
been able to achieve using tape delays and analogue sound sources.
It's such a sweet and dirty sound at the same time.....

Okay folks, this VSTi inspired me to write this teeny minimal-esque style piece.
I used 3 instances of DMIHammer and a little reverb.

Hey great demo! I'll link to it on my site as a demo tune if you don't mind

There is a new version of dmiHammer out now. The hammer section has been changed. It now only uses two knobs, one for the material ( soft to hard ) and one to scale the hammer according to pitch ( harder hammer for higher notes). There is now a master volume knob and the plug is a little louder. Let me know what you think

nice VSTi!

but one thing - i'm glad i saved version 1.0 as a separate plug-in - it makes some noises that version 1.1 doesn't. v1.0 is noisier, but i think that might be what i'm looking for sometimes.

so anyway, both versions are great, and i think i will use them. they can be a great inspiration piece.

perhaps a future version could make the noises of both version 1.0 and 1.1? i think i would use both types (v.1.0 and v.1.1) of sounds.

Bjork's last album had a lot of music-box type sounds (which, i believe, were recorded from actual music boxes), and i thought they worked great with all the other instrumentation. i wouldn't be surprised if these types of sounds became popular.

thanks dmi for the plug-in - i LOVE freeware. it's great to be able to make music on such a shoestring budget.

If anyone is interested, the "melody" in my KVR Comp Tune uses the dmi hammer. I am really impressed by this vsti as it is really useable and inspires me to make Paul Simon Rhythm of the Saints type music. (The bass gong is the FM7 running through Clone Ensemble and not dmihammer)
