AuthorTopic: Any hardware synth recommendations?
paradiddle
Posted: 26th September 2002 22:05
My friend wants to buy a keyboard and wants to put about $2500 canadian. He wants organs, analog sounds, piano, strings and maybe the possibility to import samples also. I know some of you are synths gurus Smile
Any help would be appreciated from your suggestions!

I know it's not vst related but I didn't know where to post this.

Many thanks in advance!!!

Does he care about weighted keys?
VitaminD

...and how many keys?

Hi prog!

Is it more expensive? I don't think it really matters to my knowledge, he has a fender rhodes and a b3 so I guess he must be used to differents feels.

Thanks man!

yes weighted is more expensive.. as is more keys..

check out some of the prices online.. like at www.8thstreet.com or www.audiomidi.com

look at the same synth in different key formats.. you'll see the prices go up by a couple hundred dollars per extra octave of keys (above 61)

Well the reason I ask is that there is a variety of synths out there at different budgets. My favorites in that price range would be

Roland Fantom
Alesis QS8.2
Roland XP-80
Yamaha S90
Korg Triton Le (but I am not that big of a triton fan)
and there is a lot more

Yo! Thanks to you 2.

I had the korg triton LE I'm my mind but I wasn't sure about the prices.

I'm gonna go check the others you mentioned!

I tried the other day the Andromeda A6 in a shop, IMHO it has the highest drool-factor since the Minimoog and the Matrix-12.
Of course it's bastardly expensive, but you know... It's analog and all that.... Very Happy

Z, I totally agree with you .. in fact that is probably the only synth I am attracted to at GC. Well that and the Fantom.

Someone should do an all-metal knob upgrade on the A6; the price is impressive, but at my local GC its missing a handful of knobs, doesn't exaclty scream out build-quality in that respect. You can get a Z1 for cheap that has loads of control and most of the sounds mentioned done well, but no weighted keys, presets are EQd kind of funny and a piano sound is lacking, maybe add a Moss/Z1 board to a Triton then you have piano/ big library and can sample as well.

It could be a litle more solid, but it is a REAL analog, not a VA. I would not buy it for a piano sound. Not what its supposed to be. That ribbon controller just makes the lead possibilities even better

Any reason he wants hardware? For that money he could buy a controller and all the best VSTi's going.

Nord Modular for fun factor. It is my favorite piece of hardware. Not very pratical for you he seems to need.

US prices on some suggestions.

E-Mu PK-6 - $599 and all the sounds he needs. Plenty of money left for rack modules.

Roland Fantom - $1800 76 key workstation with easy to use sequencer and room for expansion.

Yamaha Motif 6 - Under $2000 US - Confusing operating system but good sounds and will sample. Good web support.

Korg Triton - Classic 61 note version for $2000 US. Easy sequencer, good sounds but not great for piano sounds.

The E-mu is the only one that does not have a built in sequencer. With the price you have plenty of money to buy a rack that has a sequencer. If he consideres rack modules the Roland 5050 and E-mu P2500 are great values. Triton Rack is a standard. For some reason there is no rack version of the Yamaha Motif.

Kurzweil K2600XS:
forever deep, never ending programming capabilities, sampling, sick efx (KDFX), B3, as well as real time use like a modular synth.

Actually, when is somebody gonna make this synth in reaktor?

And when is somebody going to install a subwoofer in a laptop?

And when is somebody gonna make a firewire MIDI interface?

And why is pie so goooood? Shocked

bye

Hi! It's because we have to many keyboards to carry for shows and he needs it to practice at home.

Well good news, he bought a Yamaha s90. It's very nice with weighted keys Smile I've checked the manual briefly, there's a analog modeling, acoustic modeling, piano and others. I don't know much of is programmable though.

I think it's pretty much what he was looking for, b3s, clavinet, fender rhodes, analog sounds, pianos all in one.

Cheers!
