AuthorTopic: Best SoftSamp for DnB
Jbusch
Posted: 30th September 2002 12:32
I am in the process of trying to select a good softsampler for Jungle/DnB production. I have played with most of the major ones, but not extensively.

Are there any DnB producers on here?

What do you guys use to rip up amen and other breaks?

I would like to have real time control via midi CC of loop start & end parameters plus perhaps effects like time stretching and such.

I know it's not VST but does anyone use GigaStudio/Sampler? Starting at 79$ it seems pretty wicked for the money?

Should I be looking at a hardware solution <duck> Very Happy

you should really look at pHATmatic PRO.. totally chopup some beats no nononsense. phat pro is like vsti recycle with some cooler functions.

kontakt is really good for making wierdo loops but hard to sync loops to host BPM.

halion is good for larger libraries as it streams from disk.. i like it as its fairly straight forward and works like a champ in cubase.

try phat pro first of all... its all that for chopping up loops of any sort.

good luck

I've been heavily into producing DnB for years now, but have recently moved on to other projects due to the need to 'expand'...

My advice? I like to manually disect breaks by hand or program them from scratch (the latter being my usual technique). Drum programming is an adventure within itself; I highly advise exploring the possibility of manually constructing your kits and only using loops (if at all!) as underlying textures to roll out your breaks.

As far as sound design / sonic mangling goes, I'd have to vote for Kontakt in this day and age. Two years ago I would've advised an Emu E4Xt, but alot has changed since then! Kontakt is badass for tweaking sounds far into the depths of insanity - I use it all the time in almost everything I work on. The filters are very nice, and this is a huge part of achieving the textures so often associated with modern day Drum and Bass.

Bottom line: 1) Get good at programming breaks and try to maintain your originality in this regard Wink and 2) Get really good at using a tool such as Kontakt to twist source into whatever desired result you seek. Being able to establish a sonic destination and actually arrive there is the key to doing anything of substance; i.e. learn to use your tools, whatever they may be, inside and out.

Hope this helps and best of luck,

was looking through a old computer music mag and came across bomb that beat. I'm downloading the demo right now. It seems like it would be killer for dnb production. chop up any sample into 16 parts and it can store up to 32 patterns Very Happy

Fruity Loops and Zero-X Beat Creator, that way you get the best of both worlds. You can program your own beats and then use Beat Creator to add your chopped up break beats.

You also have the added bonus of using effects on individual sounds, add to that the fact that every channel in Fruity is basically a sampler and you have a VSTi drum machine/ beat manipulation tool like no other.

Just my opinion.

another good trick with kontakt for DnB is the individual loop sections.. you take a drum break.. set up different sections for looping (or modulate it with one of the many modulation sources) then you have your tweeked out breakdown mid song before you start up with the hard beats again..

Thanks for all the good advice guys...

I'm practicing for a DJ battle right now, but it's over next week and then i'll get to DLing some demos and seeing what I like. Sounds like Phatmatik + Kontact might be a good start. We shall see.

Thanks again...

I make mainly breaks. know its not a vsti, but Reasons Redrum is the best god damn drum machine imo for programming breaks.

I firmly beleive that the purple one is the best

it has the freshest sounds and the phattest filter, go run out and buy it now. it's good for nothing other than d'n'b.

actually I like hardware hardware is nice to me, i especially like nipple clamps.
