Best for creation of drums patterns will always be Fruityloops.

If you don't need the drum machine to have a built-in sequencer, then go for fxpansion's dr-008. It is similar to NI's Battery, but I find it to be superior in functionality.

I vote for Battery as best drum machine.

vote 2 battery. As far as dr008 being functionally superior to battery - battery does not do analogue synthesis, but if you're after mangling/rearranging/composing of loops/ single hits/ tuned samples, battery is far superior.

I always think of a "drum machine" as something that actually plays drum patterns. In that category Fruity is the clear winner IMHO. The question of drum sound modules is rather different. For a low cost option there's Fruity's Drumsynth which is pretty good, although a little confusing, and the very clearly designed free Synthedit device Drumatic.

A drum machine being an instrument that allows you to map drum sounds to midi and sequence them, or open pre-created drum kits...then battery is my number on recommendation.
A far cheaper alternative is Computer music's SR202...it's free with the magazine but is very functional. If however you are looking for something that allows you to vreate drum loops then Fruittyloops is the way to go.

dr008 all the way ... sample playback ... import lm4 and battery kits [as well as .dr8 ones obviously] ... analogue style drum synthesis ... drum [abd melodic] sequencing ... load vst inside dr008 [so you can sequence say drumatic from inside it ... nuff said ... cheers

The ones I use:
Most of the time: Battery Linplug RM III Sometimes: A0 DK1 (a bit old but still very good) SR202

Drumsampler:
1 LM4 Mark II (because it's simple). 2 DR008 Drumsynth: 1 Drumatic Norman

No need for any further reply....Fruity is the ultimate tool for drums... No disrespect to any other plugs, but having started on drum machines before getting into computer stuff, Fruity feels just like it should when I want to put together a beat....

Well he did say he wanted something that would create patterns, but remember one size does not fit all. As for drum VSTi's, if you're happy with your existing host, then I'd recommend DR008, with a side of SR202. Also for some of the best dedicated drumsound modules around take a look at xoxos' stuff made with SynthEdit. They would also be useful for someone who decided to go for FL, to make your own samples in the first place.

battery, dr008 etx are drum samplers not drum machines....actually are there really any drummachines like the tr series as vsti?

Best for creating drum patterns will be the simplest, along with the talent for programming good beats

youre right about battery ... but dr008 DOES have extensive drum / percussion synthesis capabilities [as well as the sample side of things too] ... ... cheers

FruityLoops is the best drum sequencer/sampler on the market, Nothing else even comes close.
It's also cheaper than Battery and the DR-008. Let's not forget that FL is quite a bit more than just a drum sequencer too while we're at it

Yep | ||||||
| crimsonwarlock | Posted: 26th October 2002 06:41 | |||||
I'm getting visions of Kriminal, beating up the drum-machine while screaming "Im rythmus bleiben !!!!!!"

am I the only one building beats out of one shots in acid?
I'm not really into programming beats at all.I would rather be able to bang them all out live,but when I do make beats on the PC I like to use acid because I dont have to keep flipping back and forth between patterns I can just make a basic beat and do a copy/paste and then make changes across the board and use the volume/pan envelopes etc then save it to wav put it back into acid or maybe x-incarn and chop things up again. not the most orthodox way of making beats but drum machines put me to sleep
| Ford Prefect | Posted: 26th October 2002 07:16 | |||||
Doing beats that way seems like a pain in the ass, but everyone's workflow is different....
| Bigg John | Posted: 26th October 2002 07:18 | |||||
Fruity still dosen't support multi-velocity samples does it ? After browsing the manual, the closest thing I could find was it would play back mul-vel samples randomly, but not according to predetermined velocity zones. Mabey I'm missing something though.
| Mirabebe | Posted: 26th October 2002 07:26 | |||||
To make drum patterns - get Fruityloops. Get Battery or whatever other drum-sampler for building drumkits - you can do without it, but it's more flexible that way.

fruityloops and rmIII are an excellent combo. they will cost you less than battery and will cost about the same as the dr-008...
| dyndyn | Posted: 26th October 2002 10:13 | |||||
dr008 definitely...
battery is nice... but too expensive... dr008 is powerful for reasonable money...
| Lanstar Zero | Posted: 26th October 2002 11:11 | |||||
I still think Battery/DR-008 and the Cubase drum editor make an unbeatable combo!
| scuzzphut | Posted: 12th November 2002 06:33 | |||||
well, there's Drumatic (my personal fave) and Waldorf Attack (which, IMHO, just sounds too crappy). any more for any more? i'm curious. cheers, scuzz.

FL + Drum ROMpler is a good combination for a software drum machine. A bonus to using a ROMpler such as Batter, DR-008 or DM III is the easy process of moving those parts to a higher end sequencer. Just save as a MIDI file and use the same VSTi.
Using one shots in Acid makes it very hard to get any human feel. One shots are better used in combinations with Acid loops to add a bit of variety. Robert |
