Anyone tried the Crystal tutorial in this month's months CM?

Totally fascinating Surprised Upside Down

I never realised there was this much in Crystal, or that it could be this weird ... but no doubt there's plenty of you who've known it all along Wink

According to the article there'll be a new free Crystal II coming out exclusive to CM in next months issue, which looks pretty good.

Meanwhile here's a tiny dem using a couple of chords with 4 Crystal presets 534k www.rossiterandco.com/files/crystal.mp3

Anyone else got any just-Crystal music we could hear?

Crystal is one of my favorite synths out there, period. Free or not, that thing is awsome. I cant wait to see Crystal II.

Confused Hopefully it comes with lots of sick presets to show some of the possibilities. I dabble in synth programing now and then, but I'm nowhere near skilled enough to push Crystal1 to its limits.

Was the screenshot in CM actually of V2?

It looked to me that CM have just used the Crystal v1.5 screenshot and slapped their CM logo on it.

Couldn't spot anything different from a glance, thats why I ask if this is the 1.5 screenshot with a CM logo. If the GUI is the same I will be a bit dissapointed. I was really hoping would be updated to give it a more pro look as effectively it won't be freeware anymore Very Happy

Yes, that screen shot was taken before 2.0 was complete. The 2.0 GUI has been updated to give it a spiffier appearance.

As for whether Crystal will remain free, don't worry. Version 2.0 will only be available from CM, but 2.1 will be available for free download from the Crystal web site http://www.greenoak.com/crystal some time later.

Moritz,

I'm speaking only on my behalf (nothing to do with Glenn), but I don't think the GUI of v2 would tell you anything about the changes... All the really new stuff is 'inside', and especially in the form of 2 features that are just JUICY... Wink

Glenn, if you read this I might as well mention it here: I don't know what you're planning for v2.1, but I would kill for you if:
a) the LFO's got a Noise waveform (noise would be particularly useful for creating random 'sparkle' or 'twinkling' sounds by modulating the pitch)
b) the Modulation Matrix got some extra slots (the more the better - I NEED them, especially now)
c) the envelopes would be given a bit bigger size... Very Happy

I've just spent some time playing around with Absynth. I'm sure that 6-8 hours isn't enough to fully 'discover' an instrument, nonetheless I have to admit it left me a bit... well... underwhelmed. After testing v2.0, I simply fail to see why anybody would compare Crystal to Absynth, when Crystal offers so many different, and much-sought-after features that Absynth does not.

I think the only true advantages Absynth has over Crystal at the moment are:
a) a GUI that's truly beautiful
b) the Modulation Matrix has considerably more slots (I'd love to see you implement the same two-page structure for the matrix to effectively double the slots)
c) the presets are professionally made, and thus showcase Absynth's potential better than 'community' presets do for Crystal.

you´re right there but I was just nosy how it looks like, not what the changes are...this is another story! Smile

Could probably hazard a guess at one of the new features..

Look really closely at the bottom two mod matrix targets in the screenshot. Surprised
