O.K. I know every one seems to be releasing SynthEdit VSTi's lately, but I haven't seen one like this yet so I figured I'd release it to you guys here on K-v-R.
So what is it? Well is a simple Soundfont sampler. Here are the specs.

-portamento
-mono mode
-retrigger
-amp EG
-filter EG
-multi mode filter
-assignable LFO
-loads .sf2 file format only

Download it here www.artistcollaboration.com/users/kalkin714/SFSampler.zip

Some .sf2 files may cause it to crash! I will be adressing this problem along with an improved GUI as soon as possible. If you find any other problems please let me know either in this thread or email me kalkin714@yahoo.com. Hopefully I will have an actual webpage up soon along with a couple more of the many SynthEdit projects I'm working on.

Peace!

Oops!!! Sorry! Here it is www.artistcollaboration.com/users/kalkin714/SFSampler.zip
Thanks D!

By the way, I've only tested this in Logic 4.8 so if you use something else please let me know how it does. I should have the new version up within 2 days.

No problem with people posting synthedit vst's here.
I downloaded synthedit and was going to take a stab at building something but I spent x amount of time on it ,got bored and started writing another song.

I've gotten to looking forward to messages from people like toby, cockaigne, and others from the synthedit community so post away Very Happy

Alright, I was testing the SFSampler further and I found that the mono mode and retrigger weren't working properly so I removed them. Actualy it's mono only now. Sad But don't worry it's only temporary.
Also, I went ahead and fixed the crashing problem while I was at it. So that shouldn't be an issue, hopefully.

Download the fixed version from the link on my original post.

Jeff fixed the SynthEdit bug so that Soundfont filenames are saved with the song. Expect lots of free Soundfont VSTis soon!

Hi kalkin,

very interesting... There are hundreds of free synths, but a free SF2 sampler is really new. Does it load soundfonts correctly with all of their NRPN-parameter settings? I ask that, because most of the commercial samplers donīt do that right. Iīll try it out this weekend, Iīm very curious on it. Thanks for your work.

Andreas,
To be honest with you SynthEdit was my introduction to SF. So my answer to your question is I don't know, but I'm checking out Soundfont.com to figure out your query. If it doesn't now I will add that feature if it's possible.

Oh by the way, the new version should also support sustain pedal midi CC, but I dont know for shure since I don't actualy have a sustain pedal.

The SE bug seems to be fixed and the SFSampler seems to work (tested in Logic 4.8 and Muzys demo). But it's still a beta version of SE so it might not be 100%.
Sorry about all of the problems earlier. The old version was taken down and I've put up the new one as a beta. The full release will be after the new SE version is out.
You can get it here www.artistcollaboration.com/users/kalkin714/SFSamplerB.zip

Peace!

Hi Kalkin, the new SFsampler version now works for me (in Massiva), i.e., I get sound. But it doesn't seem to be able to load complex, multi velocity layer sf2s, like some of the ones I have from Sonic Implants. Is this a known limitation or am I doing something wrong? In addition to mangling soundfonts, I would love to be able to load and play the "acoustic ones" I use frequently, like the SI Upright Bass, or Ethan's Basoon, or the SI Blue Jay Drum kits...you get the picture.

When I load a complex, multi-sample sf, I get he impression that I'm only hearing the "top layer," usually the quietest, low velocity sample.

Any info appreciated, and as always, a million thanks for your generosity and hard work.

I think, that only the raw samples of the soundfonts are loaded by these new free SF-players. But to reproduce a soundfont exactly, the complex Global-, Instrument- and Preset-settings of the filters and other parameters of the soundfont have to be realized by the player/sampler. And no commercial SF2-sampler can do that right to date, how could that ever do free ones?

Thanks, Andreas. I figured as much. I was hoping that Creative might make available the basic soundfont-player module that programmers could integrate into their alternative players and processors.

I use Massiva, which loads and plays soundfonts if you are using an SB card, as I do on my dedictaed softsynth machine. Unfortunately, with my setup, if I load soundfonts in Massiva I can no longer hear the output of other softsynths on other channels--thus Massiva becomes *nothing but* a capable soundfont player for me, which is unacceptable.

So, at present, I use workarounds to keep soundfonts present in my music, e.g., use a similar patch from a different synth during the composing stage and then ultimately replace the part with the soundfont at the end of the process. I would love to have full access to sf2s via my host, but it just ain't happening yet.

Magpel, you canīt hear VSTi tracks and Midi tracks (which adress a soundfont loaded in the SBLive) at the same time in Massiva?

Yes, exactly. I brought this up with Jorgen a while ago and he figured it must be my system somehow.
