AuthorTopic: F*CKING TRIONIMOX!!
arrakeen
Posted: 1st November 2002 09:47
I do NOT believe what has just happened!!

Trionimox comes with it's own hybrid installer and it's all in German. Anyway, there is never usually a problem installing or un-installing something in another language, there are only so many options.

So, I installed Trionimox into C:\Program Files\VstPlugins\Trionimox and found it had created another subfolder called Trionimox. I uninstalled and reinstalled - this time I did not make my own Trionimox folder.

No problems so far. I tested it in Orion Plat and gave it the thumbs down and proceeded to uninstall again.

I uninstalled as before but this time it took ages... reason being, the fucking installer went and uninstalled every god damn VST and VSTfx in my VSTplugins folder!!!! Mad

How the hell can this happen?!? God knows what I pressed, but since when does ANY installer remove anything except what it installed.

I'm very, very very, pissed off and annoyed. Mad

I had almost every free VST and FX known to man installed with extra presets - in addition to all the stuff I have bought.

I don't suppose there is anything I can do but spend several non-productive days trying to put everything back! Or is there?!

One more thing, why the installer in the first place FFS?

Thanks for the 'poor chap' remarks Smile

At least you guys won't do the same thing as me now... btw, it did un-install fine the first time I tried. So, PA... backup your VST folder to a safe place then give it a go. It might un-install fine for you... might.

Oh, the one thing it could not remove was 'Room Machine' Reverb LOL

The only positive thing to come of all this is that I'm making backups of my 'purchases' and all the windows stuff such as .PST file and Faves and I'm off to do a clean install.

Ah well! looks like a whole weekend out of the window.

I'll be back Smile

You have my sympathy as well Arrakeen. Why do freeware vst's come with an installer???? The excellent Synth1 proves that it is not necessary! It remembers patch bank locations and user gui preferences *without a registry entry*. Just give me the .dll and I will take it from there.Yes, yes I know we've been thru this before but I still don't like installers Sad
Funkybot

Teksonik Synth1 has an installer and though just moving the .dll will work for the VSTi version, I do believe it is necessary for the DXi version of the plug to work, as DXi's require registry entries (if I'm not mistaken).

arakeen, that sucks the big one! Unbelievable.

If you're interested, I've been using NTI BackupNow for a while. It's a pretty good program (www.ntibackupnow). You can use it to backup files, folders, whatever. As well, it can do a complete partition image. I have three partitions on my harddrive (more if you count Linux). c:drive is where I installed windows and software. d:drive is where I keep samples, recordings, vstplugins, etc. e:drive is empty, but I periodically put a new image of c:drive here. If my c:drive ever goes south, I can re-install it with the image file on e:drive. I try to backup vstplugins, presets, songs, samples, etc every week.

NTI also makes my favorite cd burning program. They put their software on sale every month or two, so keep an eye out for them if you're interested.

Why don't you contact the guy and tell him about this mess... so at least there is a chance he fixes that problem.

Yesterday I logged onto my homepage and saw three new freebies. I d/l and installed all 3. I was going to mess around with them in a floop. I hit add channel and saw my favorites list. I hit "more vsts" and got an empty list. I panicked and restarted FL... no luck, I still had a blank vst list. Restart...no good. I ended up restoring XP to an earlier date. My vst list was back and everything seems fine. I deleted the remains of those 10-31 synths not knowing which was the rotten egg. Try a system restore first, it seemed to work for me. Good luck.

I have noticed problems with some demos from promanant developers that post here if the VSTi's are not installed into the default path. This week I had problems with a synth that did not like being installed on D drive. I wish they would test this stuff a bit more. As my old professor would say, that is NOT elegant programming.

*hic* Thanks for the system restore *hic* MurDoG, I'll give it a go tomorrow *hic* when I am a little more *hic* sober. I was not sure it would work on those VST's without an installer but we'll see. I was going to do a fresh install of XP *hic* anyway - perhaps the time is now.

I sure have drowned my sorrows tonight.

Yes Chris, I suppose I'd also better let the developer know what happened... tomorrow.

oh, and thanks for the info sluggo - backing up = good idea. I will check out the prog you mention. Sounds similar to Norton Ghost.

BTW, I *hicuped* at least 20 times more than I wrote and corrected my spelling many times Shocked

This hapened to me before too. (But i did have backup VSTplugs folder).

What happened is a bad installer script.

A badly written installer script will result in a wrong directory being entered into the install.log. So when you uninstall, it will try removing the folder that the app/plug resides.

Options:
1. Inform developers that they better check/fix their installer script

2. Force yourself to install in default paths. (but still not 100% safe)

3. Check to see if there's an install.log, open it up with notepad and see if a wrong directory is listed. Remove it and resave before uninstalling.

4. If there is the option, choose CUSTOM/MANUAL when uninstalling (with Wise installers), and make sure ANY folders created during install are not to be removed. Just manually delete these afterwards.

Sometimes I even see some installers trying to remove vital system files, or even the whole Program Files.....

Scary.....

Yeah I suspect that you installed the thing into your vstplugins folder directly. When uninstalling it, the damn thing deletes the full folder Sad At least you're lucky you didn't install into C:\Windows

'Tick (very, very lucky on this occasion, I d/l Triominox but didn't install it when I saw the weird install package... wise move...)

Update, just to make it clear what the problem is...

Installed to my shared plugins \ Triominox folder:

C:\Program files\Vstplugins\Trionimox

Then found the installer had created another Trionimox folder:

C:\Program files\Vstplugins\Trionimox\Trionimox

I like everything to be neat and tidy, so I uninstalled it, without a problem. I installed again, but instead of creating my own Trionimox folder I let the installer simply install to the root of my VST plugins folder.

This put a few files in the root and the rest in an installer made Trionimox folder.

Where the installer goes wrong is that it does not delete the few files it places in the root along with the sub-folder it created - it simply deletes everything!

What I find very scary is that (if i remember correctly) the default path is "Program Files".

It seems the installer was never tested... how I wish the programer had uninstalled from the default path LOL Very Happy

Simply put. If you installed to a sub folder you will be able to uninstall OK... if not then you had better not uninstall. Hope this helps.

It's Saturday, I have an empty house and should be blasting out my latest tune - instead I'm trying to get my PC back to how it was Mad

Now we know a serious problem exists, I think it would be wise for Ben to issue a warning about this installer in the news or something.

I did let the author know btw.

first of all:

i am very sorry for all the problems, the installer has done.
i feel with you all, for sure and for real!!!!!!
i would never think about it, what i would do if this happens to me.

but at the Uninstallation Procedure the Uninstaller asks you, if you would like to delete the folder, where you installed the plugin.

if you hit "no", then nothing happens with your Folder or the PlugIns that are installed there.

i have done an update and now all files are within a ZIP-File.

and again:
SORRY, SORRY, SORRY!

I'm glad you've corrected the problem. We all make mistakes. I've had similar things happen. A good idea is to use a web translator like Babelfish to translate messages in foreign languages.

OK Luke. It was a mistake. Apologies accepted. I'm not going to rant - think I swore enough in the first post. Very Happy

The mistake was as much my fault as well... for one I can not read German and secondly I 'presumed' normal behavour from the uninstaller even though it seems a custom job.

Your fault, my fault... as long as it's been a lesson learned! I'm still going to format my machine and start again though!

if i could turn back time...

yeah, i've done a big mistake.
and i am sorry for that. (down at the moment)

i never would do that to anyone and it was not my intention to provide someone with those problems...

sure i have tested the Install/Uninstall Procedure (also in my VST-Folder) and all seems to be good.

maybe the problem was the german language in this installer.

so i have learned for the future and this problem will not happen again!
SORRY!
