Righty guys -
My loss of my beloved Korg Triton has been well documented on another thread, and it looks very much like the Insurers are not going to be nice and the police are struggling to recover it, so.......... I was already moving into the Virtual Synth arena - and I am quite happy to buy a new VSTi to replace the gap left by the Korg, I am also happy to lash a bit more money on it (say £100 to £150) to get a better quality synth. I am not that fussed in programming loads of new presets - I want somehthing that has good sound quality and is easy to "twiddle" and has some good presets to start with. I used the Triton for its lovely filtered sweeping Analog sounds, and lovely dirty bass/lead synth sounds. Does anyone have any good suggestions as to what VSTi should go for based on the above!!!!!! I have a slightly beaten Korg X3 to use a midi controller, and a TR-rack to use for bread'n'butter classic sounds (piano's/organs etc......) Cheers!!!!

BTW
I already have Pentagon, Beast, Juno X2, Alpha, Da Organ, Angelina, Space Synth. Maybe I am not using these guys to their full potential!

maybe Absynth have a certain similarity to this kind of synth, but the "real" sounds section are completely missing

HI Womble,
Check out Plugsound 5...512 presets, 32bit quality and it's only 79 squids!!! Yeah, I know we sel it....and most of you will probably say I'm being Biased... But this is my honest personal opinion ( and I'm always honest about gear!!!..If I thought it was crap I would'nt recommend something) Absynth, Virasyn and FM7 are wicked Synths...but it sounds to me like you're looking for something that will give you instant Sounds, rather than Tons of programming ability... If you want tons of preset's to inspire you to start writing go for P5... And spend the remainder on pHATmatik PRO to abuse your loops with!!!! Even if you've never used loops before, once you've started using this baby, you'll wish you bought it years ago!!!...except it was'nt out then...Doh!!!! But if your after 'Sound design' stuff, that you can spend hour's even day's making up the maddest sounds before you start writing then go for the other's...but they will take up all your hard earned!!! Oh yeah...You should also consider SR's Sonic Synth....Although you'd have to stump up a bit more for that one!!!! Cheers,

Sonic synth covers what you want very well.

never heard a triton but vaz2010 is defintely worth checking out. It has a dirtier sound than Pentagon and is great for leads, pads and basses. Also has superb filters. PLus is unbelievably easy to come up with your own patches...and you can use your own wavetables - theres a fair few to download at the user area too...as you can probably tell I love vaz and its the only vsti ive dreamt about..sad but true

if you already have pentagon and like it ... you might want to look into the new rgc one z3ta+ ... flexible ... lots of presets ... capable of pretty much anything soundwise ... excellent modulation and effects possibilities ...
... cheers | ||

I'd go with something that complimented what I already have.
VAZ might be the dogs danglies but you already have VA covered. Since you lost the Triton as a sound source, the closest replacement would be Sonic Synth, lot's of varied stuff including 'real' instruments... if that's too costly then Plugsound 5 might be worth a look at. As for some of the other recommendations... Absynth... for sure, this does LOT's and has a sound that would compliment what you already have. Comes with many presents covering a lot of bases. FM7 would also compliment as well. Check the demo's out! Z3ta+ is also a good recommendation I'd say closest to this 'sound' would be Virsyn Terra which can do a hell of a lot. It's probably a case of DL yourself some demo's and have a listen. You won't get a Sonic Synth demo but many patches are demo's in a musical context over on EZsounds web site. If I was buying I'd get in order: Sonic Synth Absynth FM7 Z3ta+ or Virsyn Don't forget to check out PlastiCZ as well when you have some loose change - it's got an awsome sound of it's own, really sharp and is cheap! There is just so much to choose from eh

Cheers one and all. I have listened to the Plasticz synth and I have read reviews that are very much in the "glowing" department.
I may plump for that as a cheap stop gap, or I may look at some of the more expensive demo's that have been talked about. Will check out plugsound as well Cheers again.

Check JunoX and Pentagon aswell
This is strictly personally but I think you can get all you want and much more using FruityLoops as a VSTi, it already has tons of good presets and examples and you always can build that sound you're looking for.

It seems to me like the VSTi's you already have should easily be able to cover the kinds of sweeping analog leads and basses that your Triton was doing for you. It may be a good idea to just spend some time learning how to program what you do have instead of buying something new. Now if you needed something to replace all the 'real' sounds you lost with your Triton I think Sonic Synth would be your best bet, BTW sonic synth does have a lot of great synth leads and basses.

yeah claradi its tragic innit. It was a seriously cool dream tho...the main part was about the mighty PMT (the producer/remix meister not the lady blood) giving me all these amazing tips on music making...and then after hed told me all his secrets I fired up vaz2010 and started creating what hed told me about. BTW id never admit I had a dream about a piece of software in real life but well I guess this is a bit anonymous...I seriously love vaz2010 tho like no other vsti....whenever i have a bit of spare time i daydream about it, it has such a gorgeous sound...and i was actually shocked when I read some slightly negative reviews on KvR! Although I guess if you dont make dance music / electronica then maybe it wont be your cup of tea maybe. The only other bit of software I daydream about is ReDrum which has the same sort of genius design...i.e. easy as f*** to get great results but theres no comprimise on quality...anyway im slightly drunk right now so i`ll probably regret these gushing comments tomorrow but I just cant recommend at least trying out vaz2010 (especially if you make any type of dance music)....oh yeah P.S I see u work for Time and space clarida so what sample cd would u recommend for nuskool breaks? Im especially after single drum hits, not loops (not really interested in loops...melodies or drumloops).

I too am a little sloshed after a nice bottle of red... IF you were into nu skool breaks I'd say go look at BT breaks CD (Rom) forgot the name! Breaks from the nu skool mabey?
Anyway, GF needs attention ... phat chance! LOL

I suggest something along the lines of Sonic Synth with another synth - right now I use Beast for some nasty lead synth solos, but I think Pentagon will find it's way over here pretty damn soon
| Rabid | Posted: 10th November 2002 19:26 | |
It looks like you have subtractive synths covered with VSTi's and basic sounds with the TR Rack. If you want to twiddle knobs use your Pentagon I or JunoX2. I would suggest something that will add a different sound to your mix.
FM7 or some other FM synth. ABSynth or z3ta+ for sound scapes you cannot get anywhere else. VAZ for a different analog sound. SoundFont player for cheap natural sounds. If you do want something easy to program consider Wasp. Yes, that's right. I've had a lot of fun programming it lately. It is very simple, but tweeking the PW, FM and distortion controls can give you different sounds. Probably my new favorite $30 synth. Robert

Maybe you should look at getting a sampler of some description. It will give you the most flexibility. The closest thing I have to the Z-1 sound on my TRINITY is JX Synth. With a few good effects it abso-freakin-lutely screams. It has the hugest oscillators ever but its filter is a tad disappointing. |
