My FM7 and Kenton Control Freak Live both have midi learn options.
As i understand midi learn is a simple workaround to assign vst instrument functions to a hardware controller box(such as Kenton Freak) knob (or slider). The thing is: i can't get it to work My midi routing is: in:KCFL out: FM7. The Kenton is in edit mode on the right channel, matching Cubase SX. The Freak command option is set to Controller and i switched on the learn function. When i switch on FM7 learn mode and move a slider there's no midi co- ming in the Freak: the display states: "Learning: waiting for data". What did i overlook?

BTW, do i need to worry about cc numbers in learn mode?
Many VSTi manuals don't binclude a cc list. There's a list on this site with cc's of several vsti's which helped me out a few times, but how do i get a list of let's say FM7 cc's. There's no such list in its manual!

Fury,
I think to use the Freak's Learn function, you would have to have a midi out going from your computer to the Freak. I think FM7 has a midi learn mode itself although I'm not sure. Usually you can "midi learn" a knob in the soft synth, then twiddle a knob on the freak and it's learnt. You would not have to do anything else on the Freak. I don't use Cubase either, but I assume that would work. Steve T

Stupid question, maybe: Actually your Cubase doesn't filter out MIDI SysEx data, does it?

You have to assign a controller number to a knob/slider of the Kenton. Then you select a knob of the FM7 to midi learn mode and then you move the Kenton knob. Now it should work.

fury,
I think your problem could be that you’re running both devices in Midi learn mode at the same time. You could do this one of two ways: either run the Control Freak in Midi learn mode and move a slider in FM7 or activate Midi learn in FM7 and turn a knob on the Control Freak. |
