Just a note to those developing VSTi's at the moment.
Please can we have less synths and more exiting new soundware Not soundware that sounds like synths (got those already) but soundware vst'is that can be manipulated and most importantly don't sound like bloody synths. Synths are dead Soundware is in! (to paraphrase an advert on a certain PS2 game that has been getting a caning in the studio recently) Ok this may sound a little over the top but if you think about it, much modern music uses samples form the 60's / 70's as it's basis so why not capitalise on this? I personally would love to see a 70's funk/disco rompler. Something along the lines of a cross between Stylus / Rhythm and chords i.e. a core library of usable multisamples and loop elements that can be used with their accompanying midi files or on their own. The midi files would consist of loads of single use loops plus some construction kit grooves.... Or equally an ethnic/world module. Or a hiphop rompler. Or a RnB / Soul (70's) module etc etc. Get some good players on board who are stylistically proficient in each genre and you would clean up. Now the worst thing about sample cd's (using this type of approach) is that if there is a good one every bugger uses it. Personally I don't want to use the same samples as everyone else is using but there is a workaround..... Get the players to play their chops in via midi guitar /bass/windcontroller/drums and then map the files to some lovingly constructed multisamples....Mmmm, this would enable lot's of good things, I you can change instruments / styles with ease. 2 you aren't limited to loop mentality, you can take just the bass line for example or just the keys or just the hihats etc. and 3 You can change the key, voicings, melody etc so your track doesn't have the same samples as Bob Random. I would love the music made on my computer (rather than musicians or samples) to sound less like Kraftwerk and more like Lonnie Liston Smith / Bob James / Booker T / Bootsy / Curtis May / The Delfonics / etc etc. The most interesting VSTi's I have seen in ages are Stylus and Phatthingy as they aren't more bloody synthesiser modules Just my 2 baht 22

I like both soundware and synths, and there is enough room for both out there, me thinks

Me too, but got too many synths and nothing like the module idea....

Hmm Sonic Synth and the eROMs + SOnic Station and the Sonic capsules are already doing that. The more tweakable engines are not too far away |
